Transfer Case Lubricant for 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

What is the UK equivalent to Mopar NV 247/245 Transfer Case Lubricant for the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee ? Can automatic transmission fluid be used ?

  • Anonymous Feb 06, 2010

Many thanks for the quick response.

It is an automatic and we've changed that fluid and the differential fluid also.

It's the fluid specifically for the transfer case we need and aren't sure whether to use gear oil or auto fluid ?

That would be 80w90 for the differentual, for the gearbox it is 75w90 this is for a manual gearbox, and no do not use auto fluid in a manual box, it is way way thinner and your box would possibly last 2 to 3 days before you would be purchasing a new one, hope this helps

The all wheel drive is not working

transfer case fluid has to be changed every 30000 miles either transfer case lubricant low or need changing or problem could be in the differential and viscous coupling in transfer case you need let transmission shop or garage check it out.

1999 Jeep Cherokee

Both the transfer cases used during that time look similar. See the following diagrams:

NV247: http://www.wjjeeps.com/nv_247_01.jpg
NV242: http://www.wjjeeps.com/nv_242_01.jpg

Here are instructions w/ pics:

(If you have the 242 I believe you can use ATF+4 instead of the special Mopar fluid but I would check first to make sure).
