You can get the radio recoded by an independent recoder, look in the yellow pages for radio de-coders they normally come out to you, costs about £20 to £40 some are cheaper.

normally when it says safe mode if you leave the power on the radio for 1 hour safe mode should disable if it is not doing this then it may be faulty.

Regards
Dan
p.s if you cannot locate a re-coder please send me your postcode or area and I will find you one near by.

Safe mode car radio

To unlock your VW factory radio from "SAFE" mode, you will need to enter the radio code. Typically, the code is written on a radio card included with the documentation for the vehicle when the car is first sold.

If you don't have the code, or have lost it, you can retrieve it by visiting your VW dealer. You will need the car's VIN number and the serial number of the radio (located on the body of the radio).

The procedure to enter the code is as follows:

Press the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously and hold them until "1000" appears on the radio display. Release the buttons as soon as this number appears.

Refer to your Radio Card and use the station preset buttons ("1", "2", "3" and "4") to input the code. Press the "1" button repeatedly to input the first digit, the "2" button to input the second digit, etc.

Press and hold the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously until "SAFE" appears again. Release, and the radio should be unlocked.

Do not enter the wrong code more than three times, or the radio will lock itself. Note the dealer can also enter the code for you (they may charge a small fee).

MY RADIO IS IN SAFE I HAVE THE CODE HOW DO I ENTER IT

You should see SAFE displayed. After about 3 secs, "0001" should appear. Use the station preset buttons 1 thru 4. Preset 1 changes the first digit of the code, and preset 2 changes the second digit, etc. Enter all 4 digits of the code. After code is entered, press right side of "Seek" button for about 2 seconds, until an audible signal is heard. If you hose up and get the wrong code...will go back to SAFE displayed. You will get another chance to enter the code. After 2 failed attempts, you have to wait 1 hour again for it to unlock. So carefully enter the correct code the first time.

How to exit Radio Safe mode on my passat

Hi
Wiih most radio units....If you have the proper code and have NOT tried more than 15 times to enter an incorrect code....you should be ok.
Turn OFF ignition switch and remove the key. Switch OFF interior lights. Switch ON Radio unit and SAFE will appear.
Leave everything alone for a period of ONE HOUR. During this time NO power (no matter how small) should be drawn from the battery. This is why the interior lights MUST NOT come ON when the door is opened. Trunk should also remain closed. In the event of any power been drawn from the battery in this time...You must start all over again.
Radio should after this time return to standard mode...Usually 4 flashing bars. Then enter your code. Dont forget to lock in the code and all should be fine
All the best with it

VW radio

"2 safe" means that you have entered the wrong code twice. Leave the igniton switched on for about an hour and it will reset to - - - (three small lines) then you can enter the correct code. If you dont have the code you will need to speak to your vw dealer

97 VW Cabrio

You should be able to call the dealer and get the code for free. They may ask you to fax over proof of ownership. They always give me the codes when I call but I do own a shop. If a shop is telling you it cost 75.00 they are just wanting you to buy thier lunch for the week.

98 VW Beetle used-no radio code- I have radio & car serial #'s...

I assume you have this unlocked by now, but here's an answer for someone else for the future :-)
if you have the original radio that come with the car, look in the wheel well in the trunk, where the spare tire goes. (yep, you'll need to stand on your head). there is a sticker that will have the 4-digit code on it.
enter that into the radio.
I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is, but either the >> Scan or the am/fm button will be the "enter key"
