I have had the same issues i took my 96 honda accord to the shop nd they found that there r 2 computers under the passanger floorboard nd that the they get water inside them so they took them both off nd when they did this they unhooked the battery nd they dried the computers out nd packed them with some type of grease nd put them back on nd connected the battery let it sit for 5 minutes started the car nd the light was gone nd the transmission shifted like it should

Could be your VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor. Since your car is a 1996 model it is OBD2 (On Board Diagnostics 2) This means you can go to AutoZone and have it scanned for free.

Check out the link. Winter/ Snow/ Sport or gearbox fluid change. Get it checked for DTC codes.

All the thing's your having problems with are computer controlled .The main light switch is a low voltage device , controlled by the instrument cluster . The instrument cluster is connected to the vehicle control moduel system via the SCP - standard corporate protocol , messages are put out on the data network to other modules to control lighting ! The (REM) rear electronic module an the (FEM) front electronic module .

You could look for a loose connection (ground ) But your best bet take it to a qualified repair shop (ford )

The steering lamp is lit, blinking frequency faster than usual

When the handle to move the steering lamp, turn on the dashboard display lights flashing frequency faster than usual, generally due to side of the steering lamp is broken, the line resistance to change. When your vehicle is this phenomenon, must be timely inspection replacement light, in order to guarantee the traffic safety.

Check your transmission fluid while it's in park and running to see if it's low,add when engine is off,goes in where the dipstick is,use a funnel.
