I have a 93 S-10 Blazer with a 4.3 vortec engine. When started it surges about 6 times then goes to a steady idle with a slight miss. also after sitting at idle for a few minutes then try to take off it spits and sputters till I get upto speed.

IAC idler air control valve bumps up the RPM and doesnot let the engine to die, how ever if its not the IAC then Ide be looking at the TEMP sensor which migh have a fair line crack or may be the MAF mass air flow sensor might be bad, seems like the engine is not geting air, check the air filter first.
the one possible problem is the egr valve. If your blazer has the Vortec 4.3, the valve is located on the front of the intake manifold. You must remove the intake rubber boot on the throttle body to see it better. It's very possible that there is chunks of carbon holding the valve open. I recommend cleaning the egr valve ( carb. cleaner works great ) and replacing the Egr gasket with a screened gasket. This will take care of it stalling and surging.
Check the tps "trottle positioning sensor, on mine the idle would not stay steady, and shift so hard that it would sound like it was going to break something. it is located on the drivers side of the throttle body with a push in electrical connector.
Shakes how? While stopping? Or solely while idle, Engine light on?
If if shakes while stopping you need to check you're wheel hubs and or Suspension ,
Shakes at a light, You may have a bad fuel Injector, Check you're psi in you're fuel pump, A TPS would cause low idle or sometimes high idle, With low idle and a bad motor mount it would shake,
I know theres a few things I'm missing but,.. I have a major Headache atm so I'll get back to you with some more, when i can think better. :)
my 96 blazer would have random missfires.... sometimes more than one
cylinder at a time... there are a few things to try.... 96 vortecs
still used distributor caps... but they had such a high intensity spark
that they were well noted for frying distributor caps and ignition
coils... i would start there... also a few times i had to replace the
crankshaft timing sensor.... it could be something as small as a spark
plug wire... i would start with the ignition before spending money to
check the fuel system
you need the firing order?? it is 1, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 clockwise. Number
one on cap is forward position, or 6 o'clock position, just left of the
hold down bolt.
