At some point, your engine is registering low oil pressure and warning you the oil pressure is insufficient to lubricate the engine properly.

How does the engine know this? What causes it? Excellent questions. The engine 'knows' this because there is one or more sensors that read the oil pressure all the time. The sensors report to the computer which reports to you. They could be faulty. On the other hand, there could be times when oil pressure IS low. Your oil pump may be mal-functioning. Normally, I would expect the oil pump to either do its job properly or NOT do it properly but not act intermittently. It may warrant being checked by a professional. Another reason for this condition could be the oil itself, though you report you just had it changed. Presumably, whom ever did the change put in the proper oil grade, service and weight, recommended by GM.

Another thought, is this warning seen by you immediately after you start the car? If yes, it is normal for oil to take a second or two to build the proper pressure, particularly in cold weather. Where I am at, it is cold. Oil doesn't like to move when it is cold (like me) so it takes a bit of time to get up pressure (like me).

If this continues, you may want to have this problem looked at by a professional, as I said.

I get no thumbs up??? NO thumbs up???

I tend to agree with highonrope, (16 votes) it is probably a faulty oil sensing unit or connection. Please read on. I would hate for you to burn up your engine because of a possible faulty oil sending unit ...

When does this light come on? Is it the same each time you drive?

If this were my car and I were concerned about the light, as certainly you should be concerned, take it to the dealer, tell them what you have said here. Offer to leave it over night or to have the service manager drive the car to see when the light comes on. I'm not a mechanic. I believe this warning should be recorded in the computer in your car and I believe the service mechanic can attach his or her OBD to your car and read the circumstances of this issue and resolve it.

You should be able to drive your car and not concern yourself with this unknown.

You probably have a bad oil pressure sending unit or a bad connection to it.

More than likely as soon as this happened, it registered on the car cpu, but if it didn't, any competant tech will know what you mean when you tell them that you think its the oil pressure sending unit. It's the sensor on the engine that tells the car if you have oil pressure or not.

What does low oil pressure on 2008 Chevy Impala 3.5 V6 LS

Do you mean what causes low oil pressure? This is a very reliable engine for the most part. If the oil light is on or gauge is reading low, have the oil pressure sensor inspected for failure. These sensors do go bad.

On a 06 Chevy Impala 3.5 what do I need to change when the car shuts off and across the dash it says starting disabled service throttle and the oil light come on and it says low oil pressure engine

Newer cars use what is referred to as "Drive by Wire. Instead of a throttle cable that goes to the throttle body, there is a sensor on the gas pedal and another on the throttle body. The signal from the pedal is sent to the ECM, analyzed, and transmitted to the throttle body to perform the desired operation. If something in that chain breaks down, the car is disabled as a safety feature, so that you wouldn't have, say, a wide open throttle issue to deal with. That is what the "starting disabled, service throttle" means. As far as the oil light and low oil pressure indications, if the key is on, and the engine is not running, these are normal indications since there is no oil pressure in the engine when it is not running.

Low oil pressure

your oil level may be low. your oil may be worn out (when was it changed last?) the sensor that reads oil pressure may be malfunctioning.
a simple trip to Autozone or a similar parts store should yield a definitive answer at no cost to you. I add 1/2 of a quart of LUCAS Oil Stabilizer when I change my oil...remember to change your oil and filter between 3,000-5,000 miles.

Cause for low oil pressure warning in 2006 Impala?

God so many of these people that try to add their Solutions are beyond ridiculous if you DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT DO NOT SUPPLY A SOLUTION. Great thanks to A Miller for providing a correct answer to the guys problem. If you are getting this light Oil Pressure Low Shut Off Engine it IS NOT BECAUSE you need to press the accelerator 3 times to reset the OIL CHANGE LIGHT. the OIL CHANGE LIGHT and the STOP ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LOW Light are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT LIGHTS....

Like 3 days after i got my oil changed in my 2006 chevy impala the low oil pressure shut off engine light comes on

This is an idication of a severe oil leak. Check the oil level in your engine to see if there is any in it. Add to the full mark and return to the oil change shop and ask them to see where the leak is. Do not operate without oil. Severe engine damage will occur. Hope this helps Moe
