Toyota Corolla Verso 2004 CD problem

CD/Radio has intermittent fault: sound, CD and radio illumination fail after about 10 secs after ignition (digital display still working, still responds to controls). Any ideas?

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2012

I have 2005 verso is well , but my cars problem I totaly lost the power and sound of the radio and cd player. I follow the Kevin Williams theory by removing the air con facia but I could'nt remove the cd-radio facia this is because 4 screws from each side which I was unable to reach with my tool. Any idea welcomes. Thanks.

I have the same problem with 2004 verso. I resoldered all transistors at the heat sink, reassembled radio and it seems to work ok - but NO, problem came back ?????

I've now fixed two of these units and they both had identical problem and solution.
The problem was an intermitant fault, that after a random time, would result in a noticable snap and a failure of the sound system both radio and cd player.
Solution:- In both cases this is diy fixable with just some screwdrivers and a soldering iron.
First remove unit; this is done by unsnapping the two trims that house the face air vents this then exposes the fixing screws 2 at the rear 2 at the front, remove screws then theclimate control facia ,this allows the unit to come out far enough to unplug all connections both to the hazards ect and the radio unit.
Once out, remove the radio lid and the facia housing the controls, this just snaps out of retainers that you systematically release with a screwdriver. remove side supports marked L & R then this exposes a number of screws to remove including a small side panel that allows you to unplug the cd interface. Note ; it is not necassary to remove the cd player from facia plate. remove two screws exposed by removing control panel then remove ribbon from socket that supports lcd screen. This should then allow you to gently ease the radio unit clear of the facia plate and cd. Once clear remove all screws retaining back plate and pcb and lift pcb clear of case. Now viwed from the top and front you will see a heat sink that supports 4 big transisters , re-solder all legs of these transisters (3 legs each) this has cured the problem twice for me now. Assembly is reverse of reassembly plug in and check out those sounds,

HI, Where are you located? Would you be willing to fix mine if i sent t to you please?

  • Anonymous Mar 28, 2012

The issue i am having is as follows:

Radio works when I start the car, but within about 20-30 secs there will be a popping sound and the lights of display go and not sound comes out radio. Then part of the way through the journey it may make the same popping sound light comes on. Do you think your fix above will work for this?

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2012

Hi Telmo. This is exactly the same problem as I experienced. You could try renewing the plug on the far right hand side as viewed from the top, or do as I have explained above. I am located near colchester, essex, in the uk. Dont mind fixing for you free of charge, but will not provide any guarantee of repair. Cheers Kev

Kevan, thank you so much! I have first tried resoldering it by myself with no luck, so I had to ask my friend - soldering guru. He has done it properly and the radio has been working ever since! Thanks again!
Btw, here are the videos I found on YouTube of how to remove air vents and climate controls on verso:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF9V85ANy...

Kevan, Thanks. I had read your solution but was waiting to build up the courage to try it. I'd never soldered before never mind taken a radio apart! But.... it worked!! The sounds, the sounds. Thanks again.

    Hi Kevan,

  • Anonymous Jul 07, 2013

Hi Kevan, I have the same issues with my radio, brought it to an auto electrician who completed soldering as you advised. radio slightly better, press volume button and it may stay on for 30 secs or 30 mins, other times wont come on at all. very random, any suggestions would be much approciated.

  • Kieran Sheridan Sep 01, 2013

A big thanks to Kevan Williams for posting this solution. I got a friend, to look at the PCB and he reckoned dry solder joints were the problem. After re-soldering and reassembly it worked a treat. I really appreciate the time you took to both solve this problem and post the solution. Thanks Kieran

My radio does exactly the same. I it 'pops' as power/sound is lost to the backlight. Have you managed to solve the problem? I have seen posts on the internet describing the same issue - so i guess it is a common problem - but have not yet seen an answer. I have taken the radio out to look for the obvious loose wire but after fiddling about for a bit concluded a poor connection was not the issue and was some kind of internal radio fault beyond a simple DIY fix???

I was one of the original people to post on this on the 11 Mar 2010. After a couple of years of driving in silence the radio is finally fixed !!!........Thanks to Kevans post.

I followed Kevans instructions - not knowing anything about soldering pcb's. I was not confident i would have the soldering skills to repair it - or convinced it would work......but it did! first time!! Thanks again Kevan.

How did you know the cause of the problem amongst the maze of electronics on the pcb???

I discovered that the ballasts for the fog lamps (part of sport package) we're putting noise on the 12v. No ballests, no problem.

Tried the solution Kevan Williams suggested, helped for a few starts then same problem occurred. Replaced these four transistors and this seems to do the trick. At least for a few days now without any issues!

2002 Toyota Corolla Verso radio backlight not working

Does the radio still work normally? If yes, this could simply be old age and the back light has simply burn out. Remember this is a 21 year old car and most people use the radio every time they are in their car. Even radios get old and fail.

How to unlock a stuck steering lock on Toyota verso, (use box key)everything on vehicle was tested.

Hi, I seem to have the same problem with my Corolla verso 2004. The steering lock doesn't disengage and the car won't start even though the immobiliser light stops flashing. Have you managed to get it sorted?
Thanks

***** Update**** In the end I did manage to get my problem fixed. It had nothing to do with the key. The problem was a faulty connection in the immobiliser motor that sits on the steering column, It wouldn't disengage. Our mechanic checked and repaired the motor and now the car works fine. It's a very rare fault apparently.

2004 Toyota Corolla Verso has intermittant sound and control problems. The radio will play fine and suddenly the sound will go off as well as the back lights illuminating the radio face and knobs.trying to...

The problem sounds like intermittent power supply. There might be an inline fuse which sometimes does cause problems. Remove the radio and check the power line to see if there is such a fuse. If so, remove and clean it with a bit of sandpaper, put it all together and see if it helps.
Sorry, can't be more helpful.
