2004 Ford F150 will not start but making a ''clicking'' noise

When I try to start I get a bunch of clicks. The truck will not start. I did jump it and it started. I let it run for a few minutes, then turned it off and disconnected the jumper cables. I went to start it and I got the clicks again. I then went and jumped it the 2nd time and let it run a little bit longer. After a few minutes of it running on the cables; I turned the truck off and then cranked it back up- it started. However, the radio never powered on and the interior lights were dim. The truck felt like it was winding down the longer it ran with out the jumper cables. I drove it around the neighborhood and when I got back in the drive way; i turned the truck off- cranked it back up (started), turned it off, then it would not crank again. I again got the clicking noises and the interior and exterior lights clicked normal and then a little dimmer in a pattern- like a rhythm with the clicking . Do I need a new battery? Alternator? Starter? HELP! Husband is away playing ARMY man! Also, I should mention that I drove it yesterday for the 1st time in maybe 2wks and it worked fine. Today? That's another story!

If it started just fine recently I bet the weather was better. It sounds like your connections on the battery/ alternator or just loose this will cause nothing but problems and then one day be fine. you can check it out your self or take it to a shop for some assistance they will usually just clean the connections and test things if that is not the problem then I would say get the alternator checked out. the longer you wait the worse damage to the battery. hope that helps

First of all Respect out to your husband for serving in the Army. sounds like you have a bad battery but also an alternator which may have caused the battery to go bad. Do mentin about your husbands military status when buying parts or service, you may get a discount, we definetly discount military in my shop.

I think my starter solenoid is bad. When I try to start my truck it will turn over and then start clicking?

I think your battery is the more likely the problem. If the solenoid did not engage you would hear a high pitch whine with no click. The clicking is the solenoid trying to engage the starter gear but it only initially engages until the battery current drops causing it to oscillate. Turn on your dome light and see if it dims when you try to start it. If it does try to charge or jump the battery.

Noise from fuse box

If the car turns does not turn over when you try to start it the click noise is most likely you cylinoid on your starter. It does that if the battery is dead or if the battery cables are not making a good connection to the battery terminals, possible due to corrosion. Try jump starting it. If the car turns over and still won't start, then it could be a wide variety of problems.

Please give a good rating, it is important to me. I hope I was helpful, be careful..safety first

My 1998 F150 5.4l engine is making a clicking sound

I believe there is a NTHSA bulletin on this problem. You can go to the NTHSA website and look it up. Usually this type of noise is the injector or valve train.
