I have exactly the same problem. Don't know where to begin. since it runs so well once it starts, I assume the fuel injectors are ok. Seems like some sensor used at startup may be the problem, or a bad/old rubber vacuum hose ... could be anything.

Car cranks but doesn't start

Take the car in and have the fuel injector computer tested. If you're hearing the crank, you're getting good spark, but the fuel/air mix is off. Ensure your air filter is clean, and have that computer checked, all it takes is a little bit of bit-wander to make your fuel-air mix go completely haywire.

2000 hyundai elantra starts when it wants to

The problem you describe has many possible causes. Any number of engine management sensors (which are starting to go bad) can cause this problem, the fuel pump is starting to go bad, the engine computer, wiring, connectors, etc.. the list goes on and on. My experience tells me to tell you to take the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center and try to get it diagnosed. If successful, they'll give you an estimate of repairs (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.). This way you'll know exactly what's wrong and what's required to fix it. Now, since the problem is 'INTERMITTENT', that makes it tough for the technician unless he/she can discover any DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) stored in the computer (ECM - Engine Control Module) - Did the 'Check Engine" light ever come ON? If so, this will help narrow the search and diagnosis.

2000 Hyundai Elantra Transmission problem

I don't know if I can help but as an owner of a Hyundai Elantra 2000 GLS with 205,000 miles and the original clutch and transmission I'll try and help!

I always start with the lowest cost solution first and avoid mechanics as much as possible!

Have you checked the trans fluid?
It should be changed every 30,000 miles!
Sometimes a Lucas Trans Fluid will cure - fix slippage!

Have you checked for a clutch adjustmet!
An adjustment can cure - fix slippage!

Are you a clutch rider with your foot always on the clutch?
If so you may have worn out the clutch!

How many miles to you have on your Hyundai Elantra 2000?

1995 Hyundai Elantra

If this car is injected it may be worn injector nozzles; ie they leak the fuel from the pressurised line into the cylinders after you've switched the engine off. The engine will then be hard to start for some time. If this is the case you'll need to remove & replace the injector nozzles.
