98 dodge ram 1500 Truck ran out of gas. It will start w/ starter fluid sprayed in filter but will not stay running.

Sounds like the fuel pump. Believe it or not...Have someone get in and get ready to start it. Take a rubber mallet, or the toe of your shoe/boot (steel toed preferably) and start hitting the tank. Let the other person know that as soon as you start hitting the tank to start it. If it stays running, you bought some time. If it stalls when you stop...You'll have to drop the tank and install a new fuel pump.

Since the fuel pump is in the gas tank, your pump picked up debris, and dirt on the bottom of the tank and ran it into your fuel filter.
Replace fuel filter, and check fuel pump fuse.
Running your vehicle with less than a 1/4 tank of gas is hard on the pump, because the fuel pump uses gas to cool it.

After cranking over for a bit, pull a spark plug and see is it dry or wet. If it's dry, the computer isn't placing it into cold start mode to fire it up. Pour some raw gas on the air filter element and make it wet, put the breather cover back on, and crank it over. It will fire up. That means the water temperature sending unit/sensor s faulty and not sending a message to the computer. This is a very likely scenario. I wet my Toyota air filter with a pint of has, put the cover back on to seal it, and it fired right up and ran till he filter..........."ran out of gas".

Spray some starter fluid into the throttle body to see if it will start. If it does, you have a fuel problem.

Why won't my truck stay running when I'm not
Try cleaning your throttle body. Over time on high mileage vehicles, the throttle body butterfly valve will gunk up with sludge, and dirt. This will prevent air from entering the intake manifold while the engine is idling, causing low idle/stalling. A can of throttle body/carb cleaner will do the job. First, remove the intake tube to get to the butterfly valve. Spray a small amount of throttle body cleaner directly into the intake, and wipe any excess fluid with a cloth. Also, inspect your air filter. I hope this helps

06' dodge 3500 5.9 cummins will not start unless you spray it with starter fluid and when it starts it has some black smoke and some white smoke try to accellarate and it will stay high.
not sure if it has anything to do with it but my ford diesel did the same thing and it was because my oil was low. the oil pressure ran my injectors. dont know if dodge is the same way. also my air filter needed replced. Good luck!!

I have a 1995 Dodge caravan, it turns over but
fuel filter, fuel pump sonds like it is not getting fuel. Because when you spray starter fluid in it, it started and ran on what little bit of starter fluid you sprayed it with.

I ran out of gas and now it wont start
Somtimes when you run our of gas it sucks up all the grit/particles in the bottom of the tank which may have clogged the the pump filter, the pump itself or the fuel filter (in the engine bay) or the line. It could be the fact that its the forth time you've run our of gas may have semi blocked it and its had to work overtime to produce the desired fuel pressure(like you say may have burnt it out).Get someone to turn the key to the on position(dash lights come on) while you squeeze the fuel hose coming off the fuel rail, if you can feel it expand the fuel pump is ok, if you dont it needs attention. I would replace the fuel filter while your at as im sure there'd be a fair amount of dirt/debris in there.
