My 1998 WIndstar has a constant door chime ring

My 1998 Windstar has an electrical problem: the alarm bell chimes constantly when I start the car and only goes off when I drive over 5mph and then comes on again when I slow down under 5mph. The icons for "abs", "service engine soon" and the icon for "open door" are constantly on. Please help me!

The warning chime is on because the GEM - generic electronic module think's the door is open . Your best bet ,have a qualified repair shop check it out . Unless you have a scanner that will talk with the GEM & the engine computer & ABS computer , checking DTC'S - dfiagnostic trouble codes . If you don't know about this , take it to a repair shop.

SOURCE: chime goes off

Open the drivers door and look at the hindge area and you will see a black rubber accordian tube between the door and the pillar. This is the protective cover for the wiring harness. Now take a screw driver and stick it into the latch that latches when u close the door and trip the latch. Now start up the vehicle and wiggle the black tube and see if you can duplicate the concern. If so then pull the cover back and inspect the wires for a broken wire. these models are bad for this happening.

SOURCE: awful smell coming out of vents/defog/2001 ford windstar

I can't help with the chimes, but as far as the awful smell, try changing the cabin air filter. It's under the hood on the passenger side. Close to the wipers up near the firewall is a rectangle cover about an inch thick and about 12-15" long. Inside is a filter. It's very easy to remove and replace, and this fixed the funky smell in my van immediately.

SOURCE: door ajar idiot light wont go out and bells is going off on a 1997 ford windstar minivan. which fuse do i pull thanks no manual

Sound like one of the door jamb switches is bad. Try taking a pencil or screw driver and pushing in on each door switch. Push the switch beyond the "flush" point to see if the switch is just not fully closing.

SOURCE: where is the abs brake controller?

An anti-lock braking system, or ABS (from the German, Antiblockiersystem) is a safety system which prevents the wheels on a motor vehicle from locking while braking.
A rotating road wheel allows the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking by preventing a skid and allowing the wheel to continue interacting tractively with the road surface as directed by driver steering inputs. While ABS offers improved vehicle control in some circumstances, it can also present disadvantages including increased braking distance on slippery surfaces such as ice, packed snow, gravel, steel plates and bridges, or anything other than dry pavement. ABS has also been demonstrated to create a false sense of security in drivers, who may drive more aggressively as a result.[citation needed]
Since initial widespread use in production cars, anti-lock braking systems have evolved considerably. Recent versions not only prevent wheel lock under braking, but also electronically control the front-to-rear brake bias. This function, depending on its specific capabilities and implementation, is known as electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), traction control system (TCS or ASR), emergency brake assist (BA, EBA or HBA), or electronic stability control (ESP, ESC or DSC).

My door chime wont stop ringing when the driver side door is open and the keys are out of the ignition. how can i fix this?

I just found out that the problem on our 1998 windstar was the chime switch attached to the ignition switch. This chime switch when dislodged will short and act as if the keys are still on when the door is open ( thus sounding off the alarm). I had a hunch that the problem was close to the steering wheel because the alarm would stop if I change the angle of the steering wheel a couple of notches up or down. I guess when i did that the chime switch that i'm pertaining to get reset to the right position and stops the alarm. when i opened up the steering wheel housing around the ignition , the chime switch fell, it had a blk wire I think, and I saw that the clips on it were kind of melted thus not sticking to its right position. I just had to remove the ignition switch for a while and replaced the chime switch with the help of a zip tie wrapped around it. then I placed every part back together and no chimes... also I did this all while the battery was disconnected because i needed the ignition switch to be in the on position to get it off the steering wheel. Good luck guys!

Door ajar keeps chiming at stops.but stop after seeding up

If you push each of the doors when it is chiming, you will find the one that is causing the problem when the chiming stops. If you loosen the plate that the door lock fits into on the body, and move it slightly closer to the seat, tighten it and close the door you should find your problem is solved.

Door chime wont stop

thgis problem is caused by one or more defective door ajar/courtesy light switches or sliding door contacts, since these switches are very hard to replace as they are located inside the doors on the door latch the best thing to do is have the dealer hook up a body module scanner, it can ID the faulty switch, then i f wish u can change it to save money, the switches are about $15 each, there are 5 of them

Chimes ring when you open drivers side door no keys in ignition

Sounds like the contact for the key chime in the steering column is shorted to ground. The only way to get the contact is to buy the clockspring. If you can live with it leave it alone. The clockspring is labor intense. You have to remove the airbag, steering wheel, and trim around column. If you ar mechanically inclined you could just disconnect it by cutting the wire going to the chime. It is under the key tumbler. I hope this helps.

Warning bell won't stop sounding

Section 13-09: Gauges, Warning Devices — Chime System 1996 Windstar Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Warning Chime Systems Three distinct sounds are used to indicate the area of concern. Seat belt warning generates 1 chime per second
key-in-ignition generates 2 chimes per second
headlight on generates 4 chimes per second.
Key-In-Ignition Warning The key-in-ignition warning will sound when the driver's front door (20125) is opened with the key in the ignition switch. It will continue to sound until the key is removed, the front door is closed, the ignition switch is turned to START or the vehicle speed is over 24 kmh (15 mph).

Safety Belt Warning When the ignition switch is turned to RUN or START from OFF or ACC, the chime will sound for six seconds or until the safety belt is buckled.
  • The safety belt warning indicator lamp (10C859) will activate for 60 seconds or until the driver's safety belt is fastened. Both the chime and lamp activate at the same time.
Anytime the ignition switch is released from START and returns to RUN while the safety belt lamp or chime is activated, the safety belt warning lamp or chime will remain activated until either the timing sequence has been executed, or the safety belt is buckled.

Headlamp Switch On Warning The chime will be activated if the headlamps or parking lamps are ON, the key is not in the ignition and the driver's door is opened. The chime will sound at a rate of four per second.

Door chimes contineously ringing ,

One of the doors has a loose dome light connection in the door switch. Lube all door switches and it should cure your problem. Ford used a lubricate that when it dries it makes an intermitant contact on the switch.
