Remove and Replace the Serpentine Belt.

GENERAL/Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with a Tensioner:
A. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
B. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
C. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
D. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with Tensioners:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

2005 santa fe serpentine broke then bad vibrating and it died replaced serpentine and tensionor, now motor locked. Is the motor shot or could something else be wrong?

Put a socket and wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt, and see if you can turn the crankshaft-clockwise. If the crank won't turn, something internal is bad. If you can turn the crankshaft normally, check that another pulley has seized.
Or try it this way: take the serpentine belt back off and see if the starter can spin the crankshaft. If it does, look for a seized pulley. If a good battery cannot make the starter turn the crankshaft, likely the motor is shot.

Changing a serpentine belt on an E36 BMW 318i(316i)

Remove the radiator cowling. It has 2 connecting clips(arrowed in photo)

Remove these clips by pushing out the centre portion with a small screwdriver as shown below.

Lift the cowlin up and remove. Be careful of pushing it against the radiator fins.
Locate the A/C tensioner pulley on the righthand side of the enginebetween the A/C compressor and Crankshaft, and pry off the dust cover(arrowed) with a screwdriver.

Loosen the 13mm nut inside and remove the belt.
Turn the 16mm bolt on the serpentine tensioner pulleycounter clockwise to slacken the belt and remove the belt. Refit the new belt to the routing diagram below and using the 1st track (closest to the engine) on the crankshaft
  1. Crankshaft
  2. Water pump/fan pulley
  3. Idler pulley
  4. Alternator
  5. Power steering
  6. Sepentine belt tensioner

If you are replacing the tensioner pulley remember that it is held in place by a reverse threaded bolt, so turn clockwise to loosen it.
Refit the A/C belt. fasten the tensioner pulley bolt by hand. Using a 10mm allen key in the hole in the pulley(arrowed), tension the belt, keep pressure on the allen key and fasten the pulley bolt with a wrench.

When refitting the fan shroud, position the shroud. It has a tab on each side halfway down the shroud that needs to locate in the radiator. Remove the centre pin from the shroud's clips completely. Insert the clip into its position and then insert the centre pin of the clip and push it in until flush with the clip itself.

98 malibu won't start

Recommend to locate the crank pulley on the front of the motor.
This pulley should be about 5 to 10 inches in diameter, and it usually is the pulley closest to the ground. It is on the front of the engine, but your engine being crosswise, that may mean the passenger side of the car.
This pulley drives the serpentine belt.
In the middle of this pulley is a large bolt that holds the pulley on. Find a socket to fit that bolt, and a long extension handle to fit that socket. You will need to be under the car to do this.There may be plastic shields in your way. Try to turn this bolt Clockwise, as you are wanting to turn the crankshaft, not loosen the bolt. If the crankshaft turns, the engine should not be "froze up". If that pulley won't turn, the motor may be "gone".

I was driving and all of sudden the serpentein belt ripped and the car started to shake like crazy. then it started to smoke and overheated. one of the pulleys at the bottom, not sure if the harmonic...

Power steering pulley is on the top. The largest pulley is the crankshaft pulley.
But the 2 on the bottom are the crankshaft pulley and ac compressor. Slightly
above those 2 pulleys is the water pump. Which ones not turning?
And when the serpentine belt broke your water pump was no longer circulating
engine coolant because the belt turns the water pump.

When the serpentine belt breaks you should not drive the car even
though it will run. How long did you drive the car after the belt broke?

So you replaced the belt and then started it? And you can actually drive in reverse?
If you drove the car very far with the belt broken you may have done damage to your engine. I mean
its most likely you did do some damage.

The serpentine belt and power stering belt won't stay oon they come off as soon a you start the car, 1985 Porsche 944

while the belt is off, engine off, check for a frozen pulley-except for the crankshaft, one is probably locked up or makies a lot of noise/wobbles when turned by hand.. Also, look at the pulleys and see if they 'line up' by looking at them from the side.

How do i release the tension belt ... cant seem to find bolt being referred to in other docs

Here's the procedure on how to release and replace the tension belt of your car.

Step 1
  • Open the hood on the Volvo S-60 and find the serpentine-belt routing diagram. The diagram should be attached to the top of the fan shroud that covers the radiator. If not, draw out the exact routing method of the serpentine belt around each pulley with a pen and a piece of paper.
  • Step 2 Locate the serpentine-belt tensioner that is in the very center of the engine. The tensioner will have a square bolt head in the center of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 3 Slide the open end of the 5/8-wrench onto the square bolt head in the center of the belt-tensioner pulley. Turn the tensioner pulley counterclockwise and slide the serpentine belt off of the tensioner pulley.
  • Step 4 Remove the serpentine belt from the other pulleys and pull the belt out of the engine compartment.
  • Step 5 Slide the new serpentine belt into the engine compartment and around the crankshaft pulley.
  • Step 6 Route the new serpentine belt around each pulley. Turn the belt-tensioner pulley counterclockwise again and slide the serpentine belt around the tensioner pulley. Release the tensioner and it will tighten the belt around the pulleys. Look over the belt to ensure that it is inside of each pulley.
  • Step 7 Crank the S-60 and look over the serpentine belt with the motor running. Let the engine run for about one minute and shut the engine off. Close the hood.

    How to replace timing belt on a 1992 pontiac sunbird

    1989–92 VEHICLES
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Remove the serpentine belt and timing belt cover.
    3. Loosen the water pump bolts and release tension with tool J–33039 or equivalent.
    4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
    5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
    6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then remove the timing belt. Fig. 11: Exploded view of the timing belt assembly — 1989–92 OHC engines 87953118.gif
      To install:
    7. Turn the crankshaft and the camshaft gears clockwise to align the timing marks on the gears with the timing marks on the rear cover.
    8. Install the timing belt, making sure the portion between the camshaft gear and crankcase gear is in tension.
    9. Using tool J–33039 or equivalent, turn the water pump eccentric clockwise until the tensioner contacts the high torque stop. Tighten the water pump screws slightly.
    10. Turn the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720°to fully seat the belt into the gear teeth.
    11. Turn the water pump eccentric counterclockwise until the hole in the tensioner arm is aligned with the hole in the base.
    12. Tighten the water pump screws to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), while checking that the tensioner holes remain as adjusted in the prior step.
    13. Install the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover and the serpentine drive belt.
    1993–94 VEHICLES
    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then partially drain and recover the cooling system.
    2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
    3. If equipped, remove the A/C belt.
    4. Remove the serpentine belt.
    5. Disconnect the evaporative emission pipe assembly.
    6. Remove the crankshaft pulley assembly.
    7. As outlined earlier, remove the timing belt front cover.
    8. Align the marks on the crankshaft sprocket with the marks on the rear timing belt cover by rotating the crankshaft.
    9. Loosen the water pump retaining bolts, and release the tension with tool J 33039-A or equivalent.
    10. Carefully lower the vehicle, then remove the timing belt. Fig. 12: Timing belt installation and tightening specifications — 1993–94 2.0L OHC engines 87953119.gif
      To install:
    11. Turn the crankshaft and camshaft gears clockwise to align the timing marks on the gears with the timing marks on the rear cover.
    12. Install the timing belt, making sure that the portion between the camshaft gear and crankshaft gear is in tension.
    13. Using tool J 33039-A, or equivalent adjustment tool, turn the coolant pump eccentric clockwise until the tensioner arm contacts the high torque stop. Tighten the water pump screws slightly.
    14. Turn the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720°clockwise to fully seat the belt into the gear teeth.
    15. Turn the coolant pump eccentric counter clockwise until the hole in the tensioner arm is aligned with the hole in the base. This must be done with the engine at room temperature, approximately 68°F (20°C).
    16. Tighten the water pump screws while checking that the tensioner holes remain as adjusted as in step 15.
    17. As outlined earlier, install the timing belt cover.
    18. Install the crankshaft pulley.
    19. Connect the evaporative emission pipe assembly.
    20. Install the serpentine drive belt and the A/C belt (if equipped).
    21. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.
    22. Properly fill the cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.

    Winding noise that appears to be coming from the serpentine drivebelt pulleys. most promenent from the power steering pulley.

    With the Engine Running and belt rotating: Spray Belt Dressing (available at most auto parts / general merchandise stores) onto the Belt. Does the "whinning" noise go away? If so replace the Belt.
    Turn off the Engine.
    If the Belt Dressing does not stop the whinning: Check the Power Fluid Level. Add Power Steering Fluid - if necessary.
    With the Engine Off: Remove the Serpentine Belt.
    Click on the following free Link for the Belt Diagram and Directions on how to remove the Belt. Go to the left (counterclockwise) to relieve pressure off the Belt and remove the Belt.

    After removing the Belt:
    Go to the side and look at the alignment of all the Pulleys. All Pulleys should be aligned with each other. No Pulley should be canted/leaning.
    Using your hand: turn the Power Steering Pump Pulley. The turning should be smooth and without effort. If there is any resistance or squeeking at anytime while turning, then the bearings in the Pump are going-out, and the Pump should be replaced.
    While the Belt is off: check the remainder of the "free" Pulleys. Do Not turn the Crankshaft Pulley (you shouldn't be able to - by hand).

    Serpentine belt

    The pulley's aren't supposed to spin freely with the belt on. The belt connects all the pully's to the crankshaft, which does not spin freely because it is attached to the pistons inside the engine. To turn the pulleys, you have to turn the crankshaft, which in turn moves the pistons inside the engine up and down.
