Is it getting fuel? could be the fuel pump. If you can, take off or loosen part of the fuel line and turn the key to see if any gas leaks, if it does then fuel pump is good, if it doesn't then pump is bad.

My 2002 NIssan Xterra did the same exact thing two days ago. I checked all fuses, I can hear the fuel filter start up when i turn the ignition on. It does act like its going to start up but it won't ignite. I talked to O'Reilly ppl. They said it sounds like the distributer . I ordered one but it won't arrive until the next 2 days. I described to O'Reilly what was going on and they said its NOT the alternator , NOT the started. They said the coil is inside the Distributor and I will need test it out by replacing that first. I hope this helps you out. Or whatever you find out with your Xterra will help me out. Thanks Gena

Most likely the fuel pump. First check fuel pump relay, listen for pump coming on when you turn on the switch. If it does, try changing the fuel filter next.

It is probably mid vehicle somewhere. Follow the lines from the tank along the frame rails. It is usually near the front of rear tires.

When engine is warmed up the car begins hesitating

I really think it's the TPS, (throttle positioning sensor) on the throttle body. When this sensor is defective or out of position the vehicle will idle like that and even stall. If you haven't had it scanned, you should do so, that will probably tell you the problem.
