The key's to the Grand Am's have a security device of sorts in them. Thats what that little black thingy is on your key, if you ever wondered.
But, if this device isnt in contact with your ignition, it wont let you drive it for long. This was done to stop people from breaking the ignition switch and stealing them. you may have to get a new key from pontiac, but you can probably have a locksmith make you a new copy on the replacement key.

The New Key you are using is a duplicate?
The Original Key has a Security Chip in it.
Take the broken head of the original Key and tape it to the steering column right near the ignition cylinder. Now use the New Key and restart the vehicle. It should now stay running.
The lack of the Security Chip allows restarting, but then shuts the engine down after 10-seconds. 3-tries and after the third, it will not allow it to Start for approximately 30-minutes.
This Security Chip sends a signal to the ignition sensor allowing the vehicle to continuously run.

Disarm alarm

Get in the car, shut the door, and insert key in ignition.

Turn the key to the RUN position (NOT start, but the position the key is in when the car is running. You DON'T want to start the car).
Turn key off.
Repeat this 10 times quickly (ON, OFF, ON, OFF, etc)

Many alarm systems this is at least one way to reset or over-ride the alarm.

All three Ignition keys will not turn over engine. pass key fault light on. engine will start with key on and use of remote starter switch. starts then shuts off

you will need to replace the ignition switch. the wires running from switch have broken very small wires. common problem.so it is not seeing the key chip and causing security to go in theft mode

Security system shut down car.ignition was replaced a year ago, light came back on 2 months later.now battery went dead and car wont restart.

The security system will not shut down the car while running, if the car shut off while engine was running you may have another problem. Do you have a "chip" or black pellet in your key, if so the wires going to the key cylinder may be broken at the cylinder or the key may be worn if you are having a security problem

1996 vette has new battery running fine and now wont start

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

1996 key turns freely but will not shut off car

You have either a column geer broken or likage column problem-you key pulls out because your 10 cut ignition is also worn out a sepaerate issue. Your ignition is basically a male fitting into the column where all the gears and likage are. I as a locksmith would remove the ignition so i could look down and examine at least the ignition settings.
