Would like to know where the starter motor/solenoid is located so I can 'tap' start it to get it to the mechanic and have the s/m replaced.
location of starter motor solenoid in 1988 toyota cressida glxi
Sounds like a bad starter motor or a faulty / intermittent Earth connection.
First check all the battery power and earth leads where they connect to the Battery Terminals, Engine, Starter Motor and Body. If possible disconnect, clean thoroughly by removing any corrosion or paint, with a wire brush or coarse sond paper, that could cause a poor connection, and reconnect making sure all are tight.
Try tapping the starter with a hammer or tyre lever while the starter is operated. If it works then it means that the brushes in the starter are worn out or the solenoid is not making proper contact to switch the high current required. Auto electricians will usually have exchange units available for replacement.
