I have a 1997 chevy Blazer ZR2 4x4 and the four wheel drive is not working you can hear the transfer case switch but it will not engage the from axle. does anyone have any ideas on what i could try to resolve this issue
Fab only gave part of an answer. Check the vacuum lines on the driverside firewall. Also check your heater/AC unit make sure the air deflector will change from defrost to vent. If it stays on defrost no matter where you put the knob then you have a disconnected or leaking vacuum line to the dash. If that works and you don't see any open hoses then remove the battery and battery tray. You'll find the actuator there. Remove the vaccum line that goes to it, connect the battery or jumper cables so that you can start the engine. Put it in 4HI and feel for a vacuum at the line. If you do then put it on the actuator and see if it pulls on the cable. If there is no vacuum at that line then the switch at the transfer is bad and isn't sending vacuum to the actuator. If you do have vacuum and the cable didn't pull then change the actuator.
Great answer jcpc83!! I have a question though one step from this. I changed my actuator having the same symptoms and it is pulling the cable. I hear the transmission switch in especially in 4low, but the wheels are not spinning or pulling in the front. One of my friends had a cotter pin come out in side of the front differential of his truck.. might have been a Dodge. I have a 1997 Chevy Blazer. I do not have any other vacuum leaks at the firewall and it appears with the new actuator that it is functioning properly. I will add that even with the new actuator my AC will stop blowing out through the vents when climbing a hill and blow out through the defrost. I though replacing the actuator would also cure that problem, but it has not. Any ideas where to look next? Thanks so much!!
Well.. I found it.. It had a small leak in one of the vacuum lines right at the transmission. It had fallen due to not being routed properly after some recent transmission work and burnt a small hole in the line. 4X4 is fully functional, but the AC still cuts out when climbing a hill and blows through the defrost vents.

Try the hoses going to that round ball looking thing on the under side of the hood
