I have a 2000 Saturn SL1 with 179,000 miles on it. For the past week, whenever I stop at a light and the engine is idling, I hear a rhythmic chirping sound. It's not very loud. When I am driving, I can't hear it. Sometimes when I idle, I have to strain to hear it, but sometimes it is quite clear. Could this be related to the serpentine belt?

With that kind of mileage, it could be a number of things. You have idler pulleys with bearings inside of them that do eventually dry-up and squeak/squeal. Belts can squeal sometimes if too glazed from years of use. Water pumps even squeak/squeal when worn.

I suggest that if you're capable, you loosen the belt, then turn each pulley in it's normal direction, spin them, wiggle them and see if any are too hard to turn, too loose, including the pumps/alternator.

Check the belt for cracks while loose and decide if it's time to invest in a new one based upon your up close observation.

NAPA tends to have just the bearings, if you're the type to replace/rebuild, dealers and auto parts stores have the idler pulleys with the bearings if needed.

good luck

I recently heard this in my car, a 2000 LW2, and ended up being the water pump. (We all thought that one of the bearings were going bad and didn't get the oppertunity to fix it myself before the belt broke) I bought the parts from AutoZone and had my mechanic install them. Total cast was apoximately $115 for parts and $175 labor.

Car stays on high idle

I have had this happen on saturns before and it has turned out to be a bad intake gasket. The gasket cracks allow extra air to get into the engine causing it to idle high. It also will normally have the check engine light come on indicating a cylinder misfire. 4 thumbs up is appreciated if this helps

Burns oil/no leaks/1qt a month/past 3 years

unfortunatly this is extremely common on saturn s series vehicles
i have 10 years experience with saturns and the only way to fix it for good is to replace the engine
at the saturn dealer we would attempt this fix several different ways engine rebuilds with new pistons, rings, bearings, etc.
we also put used engines in them-sometimes it would work-it always depended on how old and how many miles the used engine had o it. my advice is to either get rid off the car before the engine locks up or religiously check the oil once a week
i had a 2002 corolla that burned 4 qts of oil a week but still got 33 mpg,i kept oil in it and it ran great

Saturn '99 SL2 erratic tickover on idle

Idle problem most likey a Coolant Temp sensor & connector.Cam covers very common to leak around the sides & down into the spark plug holes. Also all saturn s-series 1.9 engine consume oil. Most 1qt. per 1500 miles some more some less.Service Engine Lamp has nothing to do with regular maintenance. It's a malfunction indicator lamp.If it's on there is Trouble codes stored in the ECM.Auto zone free scan with printout.Hope that helps

High idle

I have the same exact problem, but with idling roughly between 700 and sometimes upwards of 2000+ RPM.  I don't have the problem you do as far as the engine heat goes, but I definitely feel the tug, hear the engine sounding bogged down at stops, and when in neutral, finding it idling extremely high.  My check engine light had come on just this past month (with this problem occuring for a little over a year now), and it turns out I have a bad Throttle Positioning Sensor, which my mechanic says can cause the high idling.  I'm replacing the sensor this weekend with a dealer part, which I got for $102, so I'll post again once it's done to let you know if that fixed the problem or not.
Hope this helps,

Engine knock

The idle issue is normal. The idle is controlled by the ECU. There are no adjustments for the idle. Regarding the knocking noise, that could be several things, and I am hesitant to comment without hearing it. Take it to a Toyota Dealer & have a tech listen to it. We are very good at identifying noises on the service drive.

Stalling at idle

Bought a use 03 last week for very cheep because it was idling rough, read in a forum about focus vacuum leaks and to use small burst of starting fluid to find the leak, spray around engine, if you hear the engine level off and run smooth in a particular spot for a few seconds the leak is in that general area, check the hose in that area, i found a large elbow on my pvc valve line was cracked in half, repaired with copper plumbing elbow fitting and silicone. now runs perfect. be very careful with the starting fluid short burst in well ventilated are.

1999 saturn sl1

Sounds like you have one of two problems. If the car has over 80,000 miles on the odometer, your idle air control motor (basically an electrical solenoid valve which allows additional air into the motor past the closed throttle valve) is sticking open.
The other possibility is a vacuum leak. I would try removing the IAC (idle air control motor) and cleaning it using aerosol carb or throttle body cleaner. This is available at any auto parts store. Re-install the valve and see if there is an improvement. If it improves but reverts to it's old behavior (usually within a day to a week) you will need to replace the valve.
