1996 toyota rav 4 - manual transmission - need to change the timing belt but the guy who works in the shop doesn't know how and asked us to find directions! Should i just take it into a formal auto repair shop?

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2010

OK, That's what I'm thinking but of course the dad (this is our son's car) thinks it can just be printed off and fixed according to directions like a shelf can be taken out of the box and put together with the enclosed paper! Thank you!

2004 Rav 4 has a timing belt and not a chain and it can last you about 160k's depending how it was used but replacing it at 100 is a safe margin.Factory installed belts are due for a change at 140k's.

Timing Belt broke while driving my 96 Toyota Rav4, 2 wheel drive. Mechanic said that Rav has a zero tolerance engine and engine will need to be replaced. The timing belt has 55,000 miles on it and we were...

Zero tolerance means the valves may have hit the piston when the timing belt broke. I would suggest doing a cylinder leakage test to see if the valves are bent or not. If the valves are not bent then you can replace the belt and everything will be ok. If there are bent valves then the cylinder heads will need to be removed and repaired.
