If it jumps really fast you probably have a bad gauge/instrument cluster. if it moves back and forth with a slower/normal rate of movement you probably have a bad fuel level sending unit located in the tank.

It has 2 possible solutions 1) fuel sending unit is going bad which the tank has to be dropped to change, 2) you have a bad cluster panel. Hope this helps

Speedometer malfunctioning

Hi Mcguffeyo, I believe you have two separate problems. The speedo problem will be sorted out by replacing the speedo cable and the fuel gauge by attending to the cable connections or the sender unit inside the tank. Regards John

I have a 1999 dodge 1500 and when i get in and turn on the ignition the gauges jump back and forth and they never stop what do you think is the problem?

gauges jumping could be weak battery or corroded cables. the gauges has poor grounding due to loose wire, or the gauges cluster shorting out.check battery voltage should be 12.6 volts.make sure battery cables and battery terminal post clean free of corrossion, make battery cables good and tight.due to lock out features turn off radio first before disconnecting negative battery cable.

Fuel sensor gauge

you will need to replace the fuel level sensor.(sending unit) it is in the tank and is hooked to the fuel pump. you can buy seperatly from pump. you may finf it easier to remove the bed if you have some help. it is six or eight bolts and harness unplugs then you can get right to it.
