This may be caused by a sticking IAC (idle air control)valve, or a bad ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor, a slim chance is possibly a fuel pump that is not suppling enough pressure when it has run awile, you will probably need a scan tool to watch some values to diagnos correctly!

1992 cavalier. starts and drives fine, but will die after it's been driven if i try to put it in gear again. What's the problem? bought it site unseen, drove it home about 7 miles and it started sputtering...

Try pulling the vacuum line off of the EGR valve when the engine is warm and starts to sputter. If it runs good cold and then dies when warm and won't start again until the engine cools it is most likely a bad or sticking EGR valve. Try the procedure to confirm it is the EGR. You can check the internet for location and an image of the EGR valve for your specific car. Please rate me on this answer.

Cars stalls when warms up seems like the transmission locks up the car will ildle stalls when put in gear

2 things to check 1 check to see if your throttle body and plate are free of carbon build up if not clean and try,#2 torque convertor clutch solenoid sticking on and locks the convertor in which will cause stall when you put it in drive that will need the trans side cover to come off and the solenoid checked or replaced.

Tranny causes engine to stall when tranny warms up

if it feels like your driving a standard transmission ,and "you came to a stop light without pushing clutch in"
that will be the torque convertor lock up,

Vibration when in gear, and stalling.

The problem is the torque converter solenoid. I had it happen on my 94 Cavalier a few years back and was a cheap fix at the local car mechanic. What happens is the transmission warms up and hits a certain speed where the solenoid engages, but then it sticks and won't disengage until it cools down sufficiently. When it sticks, it causes the car to shake when slowing down and will snub out the engine if you come to a stop.
