1999 Honda Civic VTiS starting problems

I have a 1999 Honda Civic VTiS which has stood idle for 3 months and now won't start easily and cuts out at low revs. Honda dealer says it's an electrical problem that they can't find - high voltage error codes x 3, possibly an earthing problem. Never had any problems with it before. Any suggestions?

I assume you mean low idle speed 500 rpm. Genarally a tapping noise comes from the valve train, and a knocking noise comes from the crankshaft connecting rods. The way that a mechanic will narrow it down is to use a mechanics stethoscope. You can get one pretty cheaply at an auto parts store. Put the metal end of the scope on a part of the engine and listen for noise. On the other hand, if your car is idling at 5000 rpm, it would also be making ALOT of noise.

SOURCE: idling problem when ac turned on honda civic lxi 1999

Hi,

To my knowledge (at least in my country), some Honda Civics have a compensator solenoid the pushes on the throttle that adjust the engine's RPM to its standard idling when the A/C compressor is activated. Technically, this solenoid is nothing more but a coil and a plunger. When the compressor runs, the same relay activates this solenoid and pushes the plunger forward increasing the RPM. Pls check/clean/adjust/replace as deemed fit and necessary.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

SOURCE: 1999 Honda Civic EX fault codes 1366 and 1399

This code is not documented so the code reader is giving a false reading.
If the car runs OK and check engine light is not on, I would forget about it.

It could be that your syncro for the reverse gear is gone. Which would have to be brought to a tranny shop not a do it your self type of job.

sounds like the distributor. over time the distributor could get debris and condensation inside it and cause it to act up here and there.

I HAVE A 1999 HONDA CIVIC WITH A P0505 CODE

JUST to be safe, pull the 3 pin plug on the IAC while the engine is idling. Does the idle change (speed should increase or start to fluctuate)? If not, you've got another bad IAC or there's a problem with the wiring/PCM that's not permitting it to work properly.

The code indicates there is an problem with your Idle Air Control System. Most likely failure is that the IAC system failed. There is an 3 pin from the IAC. Remove it from IAC when your engine is idling.Check whether there is an idle speed change? IF it does not fluctuate then your IAC has gone bad,

Cuts out when idle

the idle air control valve usually takes over the idle after coming to a stop with no gas being given by the driver if it is not working properly the car will not idle at all this is probably what the problem is
