I am assuming your mechanic was refering to the front differential and your vehicle is 4x4. If the vehicle is in 4x4 all the time you may notice a " hopping " feeling on corners from the front wheels. Otherwise, the differential should not cause steering issues. What type of problem is the vehicle experiencing that concerns you and would lead your mechanic to assess a bad diff?
It could mean that they did not preform the oil change reset after doing the oil change, or it may mean they did something wrong, didnt change the filter, used the wrong viscosity of oil for your vehicle, over filled or under filled your oil. I would return to where your oil was changed and bring it to their attention.
I think they are taking you for a ride. The differentials should be check every year, but only to add oil. Yes some can die early, but there are differentials out on the road that are 40,50 years old and still running fine. I suggest you find another garage to go to, and next time some one says metal shaving, tell them to let you see and go to the vehicle and have them get some out for you. And if there were shavings, which I have seen, there would also be noise coming from the deferential, a low hum to clanking. To let you know shavings are metal slivers and not the normal wear that looks like gray mud.

Your vehicle's engine requires oil meeting GM Standard GM6094M. You should look for and use only an oil that meets GM Standard GM6094M. SAE 5W-30 is best for your vehicle. The best Brand is 5W-30, Mobile 1 synthetic oil, but you can use Castrol GTX 5W-30, too. It is very important to use only one barand of engine oil. When the CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON message in the Driver Information Center (DIC) comes on, means that an oil change service is required for your vehicle. If the engine oil life system is ever reset accidentally, you must service an oil change for your vehicle within 3,000 miles (5 000 km), or three months wichever comes first, since your last service. The maintenace tune ups for this car are scheduled at 25K, 50K, 75K, 100K and so on. Dealer recomend to change the transmission oil and filter at Maintenace II, at 50K, and the air filter too. Use only DEXRON®-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid. The dealer sugest to flush the radiator every 75K and use 50/50 mixture with distilled water, and use only DEX-COOL. I recommend to flush every 50K.
OD means Over Drive. It's an automatic transmission right? There is a button someplace to reengage OD. Now as of the service vehicle note, could simplely be time to change oil or could be something wrong with tranni. I can't tell you without looking at the truck.
if the transmission oil is black is either someone accidently put oil in the transmission or the transmission is due for some serious service. have the transmission flushed as soon as possible. Transmission fluid should be red in color. usually if it is a dark red almost black and smells burned the transmission has been worked very hard.
Are you sure that it is oil and not transmission fluid? The stains can look similar unless you actually get down and touch the fluid. If it is reddish in color then it is transmission fluid, which means you have a leak somewhere in the transmission. Either way, check your transmission fluid level and make sure it is not low. If it is is low, add some fluid and bring it to a transmission specialist to help diagnose and correct the problem.
to replace the oil on your transmission is not that hard but as a auto technician I should advice you that if on any vehicle the transmission oil has never been changed and is a high millage vehicle by changing the oil the transmission can slip or go neutral you should take your vehicle to a transmission shop and have the oil changed there with special oil changing machine that would clean the transmission and converter while it replaces the old oil and if there's a risk on damaging the transmission then they will tell you before changing the oil on your transmission and if they change the oil and any problems should happen then they are responsible for your transmission but if you insist to change it your self by removing the oil pan on the transmission you let all the oil out some of these Japanese vehicles have a drain plug you can take the brain plug out then remove the oil pan once you remove the oil pan then you'll see the transmission filter with socket wrench using a 10 mm socket remove the filter and the same way replace it with the new filter don't over tork the screws tighten to 15 lb. then remove the old oil pan gasket and make sure by doing all this process everything is extra clean, clean out oil pan and replace gasket and install oil pan then after you finish pour in 3 qt. of good quality transmission oil then turn on engine and take the shifter to R then D and last N and with engine on check the level and add as needed good luck
