Car lazy to start

Mk 3 VW Golf cl Tdi 1994
once engine is running it draws a little air through the fuel line but runs fine, however, when switch off the diesel seems to run back to the tank and is replaced by air leaving no fuel until pump brings it through when key is turned to start.

Hey bro, your diesel pump might be on the way out but here are some things to check and do and see if they help.

Replace the hoses going from the pump to the diesel filter with new ones.

Use fuel injector type clamps, NOT gear clamps they don't tighten enough to stop air not getting in.

Change the diesel filter, and make sure the drain on the bottom of it, if it has one which most do, is nice and tight.

Air bubbles in the injection lines are usually a sign of a weakening injection pump but I ran mine like that for a long time, the air works it's way through. Are you leaking any diesel? Maybe check the returns to the tank. Cheers bro.

Also, maybe check your glow plugs to make sure their all getting voltage, that ribbon on the back that connects them can rust and maybe only a few are heating up enough.

Check for any leaks in the lines going to the injection pump. If you don't see any then your check valve on the fuel filter is bad. If your car doesn't have a check valve on the return line then I would install one to reduce the risk of injection pump failure.

Air in fuel line between fuel filter and injection pump 1993 VW golf Diesel Return fuel from injection pump to fuel filter is foamy Supply line has large air bubbles. Engine start and runs intermittent.

Hi, before the pump it is a loose connection or maybe a pin hole in the pipe, check all the connections and pipes for seepage, after the pump it will be a leak, i knowit sounds the same but after the pump the fuel is under pressure. It would appear that your system drawing air rather than forcing air in. daveg

VW Golf MK3 wont start

fuel relay could be faulty. i think its number 30 or 167 in the fuse box under the driver side steering. it could also be the fuel pump or connector on the fuel pump under the black metal plate under your trunk carpet. you could try manually throwing in fuel into the intake to make sure its not your car's ecu or ignition system. if it starts and stays running it could be what took me a few months to discover after i had intermittent problems. there a small vacuum hose from the fifth injector on a 1997 mk3 gti (4 cylinder) that connects to the injector rail. i think its some kind of activation for the electronic injectors. my pipe was broken and i just cut it and my car hasnt been better since! i know this is an old question but i hope it helps someone out there!
