If you are getting a check engine lite code have it checked. Auto part stores where I live will check it for free. A shot in the dark makes me think fuel problems. check fuel filter/pressure.
have you checked for spark? check all the leads going to the coil from the battery and from the coil to the distributor, if any are loose or faulty it will cause you to lose all power, also check the terminals.
Are you getting enough fuel to the motor, i have an 84 w150 and mine kept shutting off while, i changed out my fuel filter and havent had a problem with it shutting down since
I WOULD START WITH THE CHEAPEST WAY OUT. FIRST GET A CAN OF SEA FOAM FROM YOUR LOCAL PARTS STORE AND POUR IT INTO YOU GAS TANK, THIS WILL COST YOU ABOUT $9.00. IF THIS DOESN'T HELP TRY THE FUEL FILTER, AND THEN THE PUMP.
