Replace flasher relay on '04 Lincoln Aviator (Ford Explorer)

The turn signal flasher relay on my 2004 Lincoln Aviator needs to be replaced. Apparently, the relays are all located on top of the fuse box under the driver side kick plate, so the whole fuse box needs to be removed to get at them. I didn't really see any screws holding the fuse box in place to get it out... any help on how this is all accomplished or is this not a do-it-yourself thing to change?

I wasn't able to find any tab to drop the panel down. I did find that the fuse box has a bracket on either side. The right side next to the side of the car had 2 screws I could take out and now that side of the fuse box moves. However the left side bracket appears to be screwed in from above so I can't figure out how to release that to drop the fuse box. Anyone else familiar with this fuse box setup on an 04 Lincoln Aviator/Ford Explorer?

Yes, I got the job done myself, but it wasn't easy at all! I removed the front knee panel below the steering wheel for better access. Then you lay on the floor to look up from below. The fuse box is attached by 2 screws. The one on the right side looking up is easily visibly while the one on the left side is located up inside on a bracket mounted at the top of the fuse box and is more difficult to get to.

Even after you get these 2 screws removed, it is still a very tight squeeze and I was never able to fully pull the fuse box out from where it is located (unless you want to disconnect everything from it which I didn't want to do), but I was able to turn it enough to get my hand up above where the fuses are located and feel the one I needed to remove (based on the diagram that was posted here. It took be about 2 hours to get it done and my arm was all scratched up when finished, but I did finally get the new one in place and it solved my problem.

It does take about 2 hours to figure out how to replace flasher and it is not easy. They have made sure that everything is in the way. Don't try to take it out completely. Fish your hand up there and pull out the flasher and replace. I would hate to see how much Ford wants to replace a simple flasher. I guess it is planned that way by Ford. They wanted $298.00 to change a light bulb. My cost, 24.95 for two bulbs online and 20 minutes to figure it out.

Thanks for the details on how to perform this repair. I found that the top screw is horizontal and just above the brake pedal. with all three screws removed and the brake pedal depressed you can drop the fuse panel just far enough to get the flasher out by looking through the front knee plate area any prying it up with a flat plastic object. you will then be able to replace the flasher, all this with out chopping your hand to pieces as I remember doing so many times installing phones in cars back in the mid 80's. Good luck, this fixed my turn signals not flashing on my 2005 Ford Explorer XLT.

I managed to pry the flasher out with a standard small jewer flat head screw driver..doubled a piece of tape to the flasher top so it would stick to my finger. Plug the new flasher in !

There should be a small tab you depress and it drops the panel down for access.

I have just changed mine and it was not easy. I wish the engineers that design this **** had to work on it. Previous descriptions are fairly accurate, mine is a 2003 Eddie Bower Edition and it required, removing the 2 screws on the kick panel side and the 1 near the column. I also removed the 3 electrical busses attached to it, (one is held with a 10 mm. bolt) and dropped the emergency brake release handle mount as well. Then, after all that you can maneuver the fuse block where you can finally get a hold the much sought after flasher unit, and change it! This is NOT something the buying consumer should have to go through to change a frigging relay/flasher! I hope this helps someone else! P.S. Don't forget to hold the brake pedal down !

Why does turn signal sound all the time unless the br(ake) is pressed?

Taryn, sounds like a faulty turn signal switch, or multi function switch is defective. Check all the bulbs and sockets first for damage wires, burnt wires or bulb socket, cheapest part to change besides bulbs would be the signal flasher or the signal relay if you want to go this route. the passenger side fuse compart ment is lower dash and will have a lid/door that will prise off the reverse side means behind the fuse block so will have to locat the securing screws for the fuse block and remove to get access to the flasher relay. As an after thought around that year the passenger side fuse compartment was resited to the end of the dash , the bit that gets hidden when door shut so have a look there procedure will be the same . I also have a contrdictary position for the flasher relay if you follow this link it will tell you another place to look , cars can be very frustrating

04 navigator flasher relay location

Contrary to other posts, the 03-05 Lincoln Navigator turn signal flasher relay is not above the ODBII diagnostic plug above the accelerator. It is in a plastic box that is located six inches above the hood release lever. The plastic cap can be prised off by wiggling and pulling up. The flasher release is the larger of the two in the relay module Due to placement, this has to be done entirely by feel.

Sounds like your flasher relay is broken. A lot of people think that because their hazard flashers work that everything is OK, this isn't so. Hazard flashers are on a seperate system, and as such they have their own relay.
You will need to find where your indicator relay is located and replace it with the correct type.

Turn signals will not work correctly. Click a few times, & then quit working, lots of out of rhythm "clicking", & then stop working. Emergency flashers work with no problem

The turn signals and the emergency lights work on two separate flashers, it sounds like the signal flasher is weak and should be replaced.

Where is the flasher located in the 2003 Lincoln aviator

Flasher? Do you mean the fuse or relay for the emergency flashers? Look in your Owner's Manual. It will have a diagram showing all of this. If you don't have one, get something better. Hayne's Repair Manuals are only about $25.00 and worth every penny. You'd be amazed what you can do yourself when you have instructions and photos. Good luck.
