It has been a while but olds did have a recall on faulty hazard flasher, In alero's they use the same flasher for the turn signals, It is an extreme pain to replace this flasher, You have to take out the instrument cluster and the three bolts that hold the flasher in two are extremely unaccessable. I would suggest contacting your local gm dealer and seeing If it can still be replaced under the recall If they will then the headache is not yours.
The switch itself is bad, just replace it to repair the problem.

I was actually able to fix this. I removed the turnsignal and wiper switch unit from the steering column. This was quite simple but does require a little faith when yanking the plastic covers off after removing the screws from underneath. There are a couple more screws to take out and some wires to unplug.
After removing the unit,I set it on a block so it would sit level on a table without tipping. I removed the screws from the unit and VERY carefully opened it being sure not to let any of the springs or contacts pop out..
I found that there was some conductive grease that had gotten across a couple contacts and over time had carbonized to black and was acting as a jumper across the switch. I cleaned out the dirty black grease, reassembled the unit and have have not had the problem since.
Also, at one point a little smoke had even comem out of the steering column. If you have this problem, I hope this helps to fix it. Always be careful of the airbag.
You will need a phillips screwdriver and a torx bit..don't remember the sizes.
