2005 ford focus when we are driving and we turn the fan on a noise starts a rattling/clicking noise from the engine compartment. SOURCE: 2001 FORD FOCUS LOAD TICKING NOISE
it very well can be that depending on the severity of the ticking noise, if it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, place your hand on it only when you first start it up and if you can feel it knocking slightly and if the noise dies away once warmed up id say its your lifter, if its a heavier knocking rather than a ticking and comes from below or bottom end of engine it may be big end bearing, not good. try putting some engine treatment through the engine oil and make sure you run it in as directions state then change the oil and filter and see if that helps :)

I wonder if your battery is really in an excellent shape. The way you described seem to be non sufficient voltage for the starter solenoid to engage completely. Make a quick observaton by leaving the headlight on while cranking the engine. If no significant drop on the headlight brightness. Then your battery is assumed to be good. (a cold crank voltage shouldn't below 10V) Then the remained items to work with is either the solenoid or the starter or both. I believe the solenoid is piggy pack on the starter. Most autopart stores would test it for free of charge.

my husbands 2013 focus had this happen and it ended up being a mouse nest. Had to have a mechanic fix because the whole dash/airbag etc had to be taken off to get to it, maybe its easier in an older model
