There is a very bad vibration on the front driver side of my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2wd when you drive it above 55 mph once the vibration has started the rim becomes very hot is this the wheel bearings that need replacing?

I had a similar problem and it was a combination of problems. Check the linkages and tie rods also your wheels for balancing and alignment. Hope this helps.
you are getting an oscillation .you need to put the front tires on the back and try it again as it could be bad tires.
if it is still the same,put the vehicle on a hoist and check the tire/rim play side to side and up and down.
turn the wheel and check for bearing noise.

Lift the back of your car.With a stable rest and with the two hind wheels hanging, run your car up to the speed where you experienced vibration. have someone take care of the throttle and shifting while you observe the transmission shaft. You may have an imbalanced shaft.
