the TCM is brain (puter) and has inputs and outputs
1: inputs speed sensors
2 input gear selector TRS (PRNDL1)
3: outputs solenoids, elect valves that gate hydraulic paths in the box.( to move clutch packs there)
what you forgot to do is scan he car (PCM)
USA "? car is called OBD2, 16pin DLC scan port under dash.
it will tell you things failed.
learn too the TCM has a limphome mode, that skips gears, or missing gears and. speed sensors top cause
if all else fails the transmission manual tells you to check trans pump pressure, if low , it will never shift right.

PCM is usually 2 brains, 1engine 1 trans.

check the selector lever ball pivot in the turret attached to the top of the box. I would say that it is not the clutch or you either would not be moving anywhere or would not be able to get any gears.
That leaves the box and if there are no bad sounds from the box in the other gears then I would suspect the selector mechanism in the top of the box. If there was a problem with the selection in the box for 5 gear then once you got it in then you would not be able to get any other gears or the box would be locked up solid .. Check the fork on the selector rail at the top of the box as there is a grub screw that locks the fork to the rail and this should be retained by a piece of lock wire . It that is missing or the grub screw is loose then the rail will move but the fork will not move the gear.
If your car has automatic gears , and your problem as if it is going uphill then you obviously have a faulty automatic transmission box , this can be fixed by a competent mechanic but would be better to take it to an auto-mechanic, for a replacement gearbox or it may just be a missaligned gear selector in the gearbox, it will be expensive whatever the problem is ........unless the auto-mechanic is your best buddy..............................Sorry
Is this a automatic or Manuel transmission? I will guess at this time its your G.S.M (Gear Selector Mechanism) and you may need to have it replaced. Volvo's bad idea of never servicing the transmission fluid leads to many problems. The other reason you may have this light is that you need to have the software updates done for the transmission.
. If the box has been performing as expected and this has just started ( manual box ) I would be checking the gear selector either on the side of the box -- in the selector levers or in the cable operation. As the movement for all three gears is in a forward direction and you may have a cable operation to select the gears check the cable for failure. It the selection is at the base of a steering column then check for failed bushes and if it is a top mounted lever directly into the gear box then check that the pin that pivots the gear lever is tight and not worn. I am reasonable confident that the problem is in the selection mechanism and not in the box proper.
Hi Gary, I may be wrong but I think the gear selector mechanism would not cause the vehicle to cut out? If a diagnostic scan has reported a fault with the selector mechanism it will be with alignment of the switching mechanism which allows start up only in park or neutral. If the starter turns the engine with the selector in either of those two positions (P or N) the problem is with the engine not the shifter. If the engine does not turn you may have two or more problems. Give more details and describe the events leading to the problem more clearly. Regards John
where the hole is for your say t bar selector on gear box, should be closest to the rear of your car so park is forward in the car means the gear box selector should be in opposite direction means closest to rear of car if having problems give me a call 0414946767 good luck.
