Gm says a 3800 engine should last ove 400,000 miles with normal service. This engine for 97 will probably need a new plastic intake manifold one day. They will leak coolant into the combustion chamber and some un-educated mechanics will tell you that it needs head gaskets as they don't have a head gasket problem. The oil pan may leak on this car too, replace it with a fel-pro perma dry gasket and it will stop it. Mine has 297,000+ miles on it.
My 1997 LaSabre has 244500+ and runs great. Replaced the transmission at 239000+ with a used transmission. No other problems except normal wear/tear on several parts. Keep the oil changed and serviced on a regular basis and your car should run for several miles.
Very general question....depends on how well you take care of it, and/or how long you want to keep investing money into it when big ticket items start to fail. I had an 89 regal for 131k, ran great, sold it. And a 1995 regal for 109k, ran great, sold it, and it's still on the road..

This is a fairly common problem, Gm has actually issued a service bulletin regarding this repair. The problem probably originates from one of your wheel speed sensors that is mounted inside one of your front wheel bearings. To be sure, you need to have the car scanned to find out which one and then you have to replace the whole bearing assembly because the sensor is integral to the bearing. The bearing is not hard to do but you will need some professional tools if you want to do it yourself. At a shop it should cost between 3 and 400 dollars complete.
