Will not take gas going up a hill but will maintain speed at 55 mph. ... Want to do a diagnostic test on my 1997 F250 with 460 engine. ... only get to about 40 miles an hour if i push it the engine acts like its running out of gas, thank you .... The truck hesitates on acceleration, while driving on flat surface is fine, however climbing ...
IT COULD BE DIRTY CLOGGED FUEL INJECTORS OR BAD SPARK PLUGS + WIRES STOPPED UP AIR FILTER. BUT HAVE CAR SCANNED IT COULD BE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR OR VOLUME AIR FLOW SENSOR.COULD BE MANY THINGS.
You may have a clogged up egr valve. When the egr valve gets clogged up with carbon, the truck will run rough, surge stall, and be very anemic on power. Is the service engine soon(check engine) light on? I've dealt with this issue before, and those 4.3 v6's tend to get egr issues. Try this: when it bogs and runs rough, stop truck, open hood, and tap on egr valve base( where it bolts to engine) if rough running clears up, there's your problem. Egr valve is located on front of engine just to the rt of alternator bracket.
Check the fuel filter to see if it is plugged.
Remove the fuel filter, and blow air through it in the normal direction of fuel flow. You should be able to blow through it very easily. If it feels restricted, try blowing through it the opposite way, and if there is a lot of dirt coming out, you have found a common cause of this problem. Hope this helps.
i had the same trouble, there is a rubber boot under the cover on the top of the motor, it is coming from the egr valve, takes about 5 mins to repair and less than 5 dollars.
Have you changed your fuel filter lately? I had a vehicle once whose fuel tank that had a rusty seam. Every 10,000 miles or so, the rust flakes would clog the fuel filter, and the engine would sputter and stall when the vehicle was climbing uphill. If you idled for a bit, you could drive on for a ways, until the same thing happened.
A nearly dead fuel pump could cause the same problem, I suppose.
This make/model has a chronic problem with EGR clogging. If you have a dashboard indicator showing "check engine" most likely it is a trouble code indicating and EGR (exhaust gas recirculator) valve problem. Symptoms are rough idle, and surging and stalls.
What happens is sediments from the exaust manifold get sucked up into the valve when it opens, then stick in the valve and keep it from closing. When the valve is open when it should be closed, the engine runs very rough.
I removed my egr and then dislodged the sediment (pea-sized debris) and then re-installed the valve. Three days later, the same "check engine" and same rough idle. I must have did this at least three or four more times.
What I found that gave me a permanent solution was an aftermarket filter gasket that keeps debris from clogging. I don't remember the name of the product, but a search for "EGR filter gasket" may lead you to the product.
Install the gasket between the EGR and the exhaust manifold and you should be good to go. Note: on 1995 and newer models, disconnecting the EGR from the wiring harness (common on R&R) may require the computer to be reprogramed.
when was the last time the oil was changed on either one off these vechs. on the one hand the cam sensor is located in the timing cover with a spring, this will not cause a no start our dying problem but will set a cel light. if the egr passages is pluged up it will cause a egr problem hard start no start rough ilde. o2 sensor can cause a rough ilde but will also set a code . what is the mech condation off these vechs. run a commpession test and a vauccmn test. if these two items show bad readings our result. these two test should be done frist
