Hi. The crankshaft position sensor is located on the intake sector of the engine block, near the flywheel. This will be on the AAA engine build.

On the ABA build, The crankshaft position sensor is mounted on the side of the engine block, near the crank pulley.

2001 vw beetle died at stop light and now it will not start its not getting any fire

HAve you checked the crank sensor? the crank sensor is what times the motor and sends the spark signal from the ECU to the coil packs. typically these will act up a little before they all out quit, but in your case this could be a case where it gives with out warning.

2001 Beetle ,Starts fine when Cold, after a Drive and Shot off it will crank over but not fire . Wait 30-45 Min. and it will start up fine

Heat problem in the Crank Angle Sensor..... located near the flywheel area on the lower front of the block.Held in with a 5mm Allen head socket bolt. Fiddly to get to.

Other common problem is the Cam Angle Sensor under the camshaft sprocket....job for a specialist or VW.

Often the ECU will not pick up these faulty sensors unless signal is out of range with engine running.
Still need to have a scanner pull the engine codes.

2001 vw beetle tdi(deisel) cranks but won't start

It could either be the engine speed sensor or the fuel injection pump. When this happened to me, ofcourse I was in the middle of nowhere. The fuel injection pump needed replacing. To do this they had to also time it... I let vw do this one reluctantly.
