Security system I just put in a new ignition assemble in my 1997 Pontiac Sunfire and now the security system does not recognize the new key. What do I need to do next to get the car started?

the car has a passive antitheft security feature. lock the car with the fob and then open with the key or the fob and insert the key in the ignition and turn to crank position and see that security light is not flashing . otherwise the yellow wire to the ignition switch is open or disconnected.

No, the 98 is a VATS system. The 2000 is a passlock system. If the ignition still physically works, you CAN bypass the security feature.

The security light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM. (Theft Deterrent Module) The TDM is what tells your computer that the correct key is being used and that it is "OK" to allow the vehicle to start and run. These 3 parts must be in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending important signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, (normally due to a failing/broken part) the car goes into antitheft mode. The car misinterperates this and thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is NOT getting that signal from YOUR specific key. There is where the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. So basically, if that light is on, your system has some sort of failing part. This can start as an intermittent "no start", to your vehicle not running for days at a time, to the vehicle NEVER starting again. The problem is electrical and computer based, so don't count on an easy reset button, or the problem fixing itself. The hard part is isolating which part is the problem. You can spend a thousand dollars through a mechanic very easily. I have had great luck with bypassing the entire system. This way the problem will never return. It actually CAN'T ever return because it is eliminated. This can also be done yourself at a much cheaper cost. Read through this link very carefully. GM vehicles are equipped with an anti theft system. There are several parts that must communicate properly for their system to work. When they don't communicate, it will either shut off the starter or injectors. You may have had this problem and mis diagnosed it as ignition or starter. Also after changing the ignition this may have interrupted the system also. Look for a light on the dash that says "security". if you see this light, then this is the problem. nitabelle57, It sounds like your security system will not recognize the new key you purchased. Keys have a chip in them which has to be recognized by the security system in order to work. The new key has to be programmed by your security system before it will start your vehicle. You will need a battery charger to program the key as this procedure takes thirty minutes to do. Put the charger on the battery. Be sure everything else is turned off. Place the new key in the ignition and turn it to the run position. The security light should come on. After ten minutes the security light should be out, if not proceed anyway. Turn the key to the off position but do not remove it. Wait five seconds and turn it to the run position once again. Wait another ten minutes and turn it off again. Wait five seconds and turn it to the run position once again. After the final ten minutes turn the key off (do not remove it) Wait thirty seconds and then the key should be programmed. If you have any other keys they will not work now as the security system is now programmed for the one key. If you have another key and need it for another driver then start the vehicle with the newly programmed key and let it run for about a minute. Place the extra key in the ignition and turn it to the run position and wait sixty seconds. This should solve that problem. Good luck with this.

try relocking your driver door and unlocking wit the key.sounds stupid but this how most security systems are overridden.

do u have an owners manual? this is the security system warning symbol, you have been locked out, try this reset procedure, if that doesn't reset the key code then you will need a dealer to hook up a GM scasnner and see what the problem is.
PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the PASSKEY system to recognize your key.
