SOURCE: rough idle and lopes

Those 4.3L's have a Central Port Fuel Injection system with one injector in the middle of the intake under the plenum, they are good for either the fuel pressure regulator or the plastic lines (that are inside the intake that feed the injector) leaking inside and flooding the intake with fuel. The best way to tell is to take the plenum off and thurn the key to prime the fuel pump and watch for leaks.

SOURCE: won't idle

Try cleaning the throttle plate with carb cleaner and a toothbrush, be sure to clean the edges.

SOURCE: Failing NJ State Inspection for Low Idle Emissions

Based on what your write up says it would have to be a timing issue or Mass Air flow Sensor (MAF) .If your getting 20 HG's at idle steady there can't be a vacuum leak.Your a little on the rich side so its probably a dirty MAF.Try cleaning it first and see what you get . If that doesn't work then reset timing.
Keep me posted on this .

SOURCE: COLD RUNNING PROBLEM...NO POWER COLD...RUNS GOOD

wow you love spending money for nothing ,ask a local mechanic where the engine temperature sensor is located for the automatic choke and change it as i dont think its working correctly so mixture is weak hence the loss of power till engine warms up ,remember this vehicle is well past its sell by date so it may also pay to do a compression check as it could also be low on compression and its needs the valves grinding in and maybe new piston rings ,anothe pssibility is the head gasket it could be failing and blowing between two pistons and sealing up a bit when it warms up ?? who knows as their too many weird and wonderful faults with a motor vehicle .But i would go for the autochoke temperature sensor first where ever its located as iam a europeon mechanic and never seen this vehicle except on the TV so please forgive my ignorance of component location .

Lloyd; sounds like vacuum leak, i use starter fluid (CAREFULLY)to locate vacuum leaks. Also on the 2.2 ecotec fuel dirty stuck injectors can do this, while car is running, give a sharp 2 or 3 raps on injectors one at a time, listen for engine noise change,

Really rough engine idle at cold start up,, reving the engine seems to smooth it out,,,,

Some causes about rought idle could be:
- Valve adjustment
- Incorrect ignition timing,
- Vacuum leaks
- Bad ignition wires (Test w/ ohmmeter)
- Incorrect idle speed
- Cold Start Injector always "ON" (Revised injector time switch avail.)

A source of rough idle in EFI engines is air leaks or vacum leaks these leaks will upset the fuel mixture without triggering any codes. A bad oxigen sensor will also cause a rough idle, but you should see a code for it ( I think is number 5, but check it).

A good place to start would be an inspection of the spark plugs, plug wires, ignition timing, and idle speed. Next would be valve adjustment. Don't overlook the simple things.

Hope this helps, keep us updated and just keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

4.0 liter motor will not idle below 24500 rpm. 1994 aerostar, 4 liter motor, auto

i hope that the 24,500 RPM is a miss-print and you mean 2450 RPM.

get a can of carburetor cleaner and spray around the intake manifold with the engine running if there is a vacuum leak causing the idle problem when you spray the cleaner around the leak the idle will change, if you find no leaks replace the idle control valve or motor witch ever you want to call it.

let me know if there is any thing else you need.

99 suberban wont idle without giving it gas

Did this happen all of a sudden or creep up on you? Did the check engine light come on? The first thing I would check would be the IAC, or Idle air controller on the throttle body. If it is stuck wide open or died in the open position it will bleed in air like a vacuum leak. the next is the vacuum leak!
A broken or deteriorated vacuum hose leaking air into the intake. Another thing that can do that is the EGR valve If it is stuck it will let exhaust enter the intake and at idle it will kill the engine.
A vacuum leak by a hose can usually be heard as a his when the engine is started, same with the IAC. The EGR open will just kill the idle with no obvious sounds.

Runs rough till warmed up. Hesitates. I put a new

Ok, you got new 02 sensors, that is good, Now check timing, vacuum hoses for leaks, check for headgasket leak with compression test, Check or change fuel filter and plug wires. If fuel injected, try using injector cleaner and you can also remove one injector at a time to make sure it is not leaking or plugged. You can also test throttle position sensor and idle position sensor with an ohmmeter to see if they are good.

1989 ford f150 w/ 5.0 liter..... engine light on

I would check the oil pressure of the engine. The reason is the timing chain tensioners are run with oil pressrue. I think your timing chain tensioners are leaking down when engine is getting to operating tempature . The oil is thinning down as warms up , as it should to lubercate . I would check compression and do a cylinder leak down test on all the cylinders. Then if the compression is good and the cylinder leak down is good. I would change all the timing components, ( chain, timing gears, timing chain tensioners )

Good Luck , I hope this helps.

4.3 Liter V-6 Idles rough when in gear, runs fine on highway.

Can you check fuel trims at idle and under load?
If fuel trim is high at low speed and load, look for a vacuum leak.
If fuel trim is high at high speed and loads, look for fuel volumn problem or restriction.
If fuel trim is high at all speeds and loads look for pcm input fault, maybe a maf sensor problem?
If fuel trim is negative low speed and load, look for fuel pressure regulator or injector leak. If fuel trim is negative at all speeds and loads check ect and iac.

If you have the spider fuel system, that system is noted for problems. key on engine off, 60--66 psi fuel pressure.
