My 2004 ford ranger battery went dead. I

My 2004 ford ranger battery went dead. I replaced it and had a smog test performed after driving about 6 miles. The test failed because the light would not come on. It has now been 30 hours since replacing the battery. I have now driven the truck approximately 50 miles. First, since I don't remember the light..what does is say or look like on the instrument panel. Secondly is it likely that the light is burned out?

Hello Y2Kdiego,

Your vehicle does a "SPECIAL TEST"...

Every-time you turn on your ignition.. all your lights
get ILLUMINATED... (or should get illuminated)

Described right here in your owner's manual: (Page 10)
FORD Ranger Owner Manual Instrument Cluster

Your OWNER'S MANUAL says it is a "bulb test"...
(To me... it is not unlikely... that a 2004 bulb has
EXPIRED... (croaked (has gone to a better place)).

Before you decide to HIRE the whole
GENIUS BAR at your local dealership...

Consider buying that bulb (I'm just saying)...

While I can find ABSOLUTELY no indication
WHAT bulb... the schematic drawings
(or FORD FACTORY MANUALS)... definitely
show "bulbs" (and some LIGHT EMITTING DIODES)

Nice...
Just no USEFUL nomenclature (bulb type).

Where I you (when located & identified)...
I would buy a bunch... (consider the age of the other bulbs while you're there).

Finally ... a reason to talk to a DEALER... (in my opinion)

Else
you have a "micro-processor" resident on the
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ...

For FREE drawing & TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS
(Popular USA vehicles: registration required)... go to
BBB Industries Premium Alternators Starters Power Steering Products

Hope this helps

Check engine light . Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . Special testing needs to be done to determine what the problem is . Bulb or the insturment cluster .

Actually the Speedo is controlled by the PCM I would pull the NEGATIVE battery cable for 30 minutes and then hook it back up. this will reset the PCM.

whoever installed the egr valve, if it wasnt you, just cleared the engine codes, thus giving you this problem once again. Get it scanned at autozone, and go from there.

My 2001 Ford Mustang fail smog because we replaced the battery and now they say we need to reset computer. Any easy way to do this?

They are wrong Donetta. Replacing the battery DID reset the computer, it erased all the stored data. Now you have to do a full 'Drive Cycle', to create data for the test to read. Take it to a different place, they are trying to rip you off.

I have a 2007 Toyota Corolla. Went for emissions test after replacing the battery and we failed the test. It showed 'Not Ready' because of the new battery.

You must perform an OBD2 drive cycle to make ready for testing.
Toyota Drive Cycle for Setting Smog Check Readiness Monitors
  • Fuel tank at 1/2.
  • Engine cold start idle for 10 minutes.
  • Drive at highway speed 55-60 mph with steady throttle for 16 minutes.
  • Return to idle for three minutes with engine running in park.
  • Drive again at medium speed 40 mph for eight minutes.
  • Return to idle for three minutes.
  • Repeat next day.

2002 ford ranger start engine truck run for 5 minutes an shuts off then i have to jump start truck battery is dead bad alternator or battery

taking the battery leads of a running alternator is one sure way of destroying the alternator
if you think a battery is dead you have it load tested and replaced if it doesn't meet the test
what you should be doing is taking the vehicle to an accredited auto electrician and having the battery load tested and the alternator and voltage regulator professionally tested for proper operation

No any codes will let you fail..Rangers are bad about the valve sticking..But first look on th driverside very back on the intake..Youll see a valve with two vacuum lines The one that goes on the bottom of the valve makes a 90 bend and is bad about breaking..If the lines are good then work the valve by hand and see if it will move
