I replaced the #31 and #32 fuses, both blown. The # 31 fuse blows when the lights get turned on. I disconnected the balast from the rear center light, replaced the #31 fuse then turned the lights on, the fuse did not blow and the turn signals now work. However, when I step on the brake the #32 fuse blows. I am picking up a brake switch tomorrow morning since the shifter still does not shift into a drive gear. I look forward to your recommendations. Thank you.

I replaced the brake switch today and it solved the gear shifter problem and most of the rear light inop problem. When I reconnected the center rear light
(neon I think)balast both the #31 and #32 fuses blew again. I disconnected the the balast and replaced the fuses and no issues except for the center rear light not working. At least I can now drive the Mark VIII with brake lights and the outer tail lights. My question now is what can I do to repair the center neon light?
Can I just replace the balast or do I have to find a complete unit? Thank very much.

What have you checked so far? Are you stepping on the brake pedal first before you try to shift into a gear selection? Are the rear brake-lights working?

Ok so you need to go further and check for blown fuses. If one or more is blown and you replace them do they blow out, is it fine, or did you find nothing wrong?
If the fuses are fine then you may have a bad brake switch, relay, or wiring. Please let me know what you find and how it is going.

Well you are doing good so far. Now you need to try finding the source (the short). If you have or can buy/borrow a short finder it will make finding this short fast and easy. If not, you need to look at as much as you can. Inspect the wiring, the bulbs (even look at the filaments) and the part number if they were replaced recently (could be the bulb), I don't know the condition of the car but if it has body damage you may want to look at the affected area for pinch wiring.
Looking for shorted wiring can be long and frustrating. But you now know the circuits that are being affected so that does help narrow it down.
If the brake-light switch and the wiring checks out it is hiding its self. You will have to make a choose whether to continue looking or to sent it to the dealer. If you choose to continue then you may want to look under the carpet. I can say that with a short finder the mechanic will probably find it in less then an hour. I wish I could help more but with a short you know what I'm saying. Good luck and stay in touch, I'd like to know how you made out and where the short ended up being.

Fuse for brake lights keeps blowing out, shifter won't go into gear

Your vehicle has a safety system that won't let you take it out of park unless you have the brake pedal pressed ! Your brake switch could be shorted inside causing fuse to blow !
Shift Interlock System A brake/shifter interlock mechanism prevents shifting the transmission out of the PARK position unless the brake pedal (2455) is applied. The system consists of the following components:
  • an actuator activated by the key interlock assembly and brake pedal pressed input.
  • necessary wiring.
The system operates as follows:
  • The actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to RUN, locking the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the shift lock actuator is deactivated.
  • The transmission range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.
The ignition/shifter interlock cable (3F719) locks the transmission range selector lever in the PARK position when the ignition switch is in the LOCK position. It also requires the selector lever to be in the PARK position to turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.

1998 lincoln mark viii steering wheel dont return

the first thing to do is to make sure the steering is not binding up,like a balljoint or tierod , un hook the tierods and feel the turn of the wheel at the wheel not the steering wheel, make sure its not thight do the same on the other side, also take a good look at the shaft going to steering gear, ive found that the ujoints rust up and bind, causes wheel not to return, it could also be a leaking rack internally, start there, good luck.

I have a 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII. The button that you have to push in on the gear shift lever is frozen and we can't get it out of park. Need ideas on what causes this. Hate to take it into a dealer and pay...

make sure brake lights work, if they dont the switch may be bad, not allowing you to pull out of park. check fuses also. if the seat motor runs, check if the cable has come loose.
