Why won't the oil and temperature gauge work on my 1988 ford ranger? We put another motor in it and now all gauges work except for the oil pressure gauge and the water temp gauge. All is connected. What now?
Re: why won't the oil and temperature gauge work on
You should switch the temperature sensor and oil pressure sensor you had on your first engine, because your new engine must come with the light indicator dashboard so the sensor of your new engine are not compatible with your gauges....lipak!...

possible low coolant level
loose wire on sender unit
faulty sender unit
take the wire of the sender unit and put it to ground
with the ignition switch on , the gauge should go straight to hot
that indicates the circuit and gauge is operational which leaves the coolant level and sender unit
Could be a massive intake air leak being caused by a defective egr valve.
Could be just about anything and it will need similar checks to an engine when it is a cold non-starter with verification of the essentials of spark, fuel, compression and timing.
Lots of components can become temperature temperamental.
Good luck!
The ticking is probably your lifters..The car is of age. Try putting a thicker oil..like 15-50. What causes them to tick is when your push rods are clogged up causing the oil not to reach you rocker arms.
Why are they stuck? Is it from setting and there rusted up? or are they sezed up from lack of oil? If its rust just take some trans oil and pour some into each spark plug hole and let it set over night, and then put a socket on the harmonic and turn back and forth until it frees up. If its lack of oil its my best guess you better look for another engine.
try to find an 1988======>93 ranger. the closer to 88 the better. the wiring harness is similar in 90-93, but you will have to adapt some parts on the newer.
