I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS A TIMING CHAIN. IT SHOULD BE CHANGED AT OR ABOUT 100,000 MILE. BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE CHANGED THEN, JUST INSPECTED.

the 2002 grand Cherokee WJ jeep, can be quada-drive ? or quadra-trac- II NV247 (transfer case) regardless of that...
stay out of 4wd low, use low only on ice or dirt, dead slow. it will grind a bit going into low. low is never to be used on dry pavement. dry means, no ice. the book on car is clear, its for rock crawling off road only. (super low speed) , put at least on tire on dirt then drive slow and shift out of 4wd LOW, lock,. if not, damage to the drive line can happen do not attempt this moving fast ever, (into or out of LOW)
You have a timing chain that is good for the life of the engine. The only thing that could need replacing is the chain tensioner if it starts to make noise.
You will not need to change a timing chain unless you know or suspect it to be bad. Belts and other material that wear down need to be changed but the timing chain itself is a metal similar to that of a bike chain but much shorter and thicker
You really need a repair manual for your model. Most Auto parts stores carry these. However, If your timing belt has been broken (burnt) while the vehicle was running, then you'll need to check for bent valves or cracked pistons. If you are not one, you may need a mechanic.
When does this sound happen? Does it do it in 4wd or in 2wd? Does the sound change when turning?
If the t-case is visually not broken, it could be just a strecthed
chain inside the t-case. A chain is about 280.00 dollars plus
