Most auto stores (Autozone) will use a scantool to tell you what the problem is & clear off the check engine light. It is a free service, but I'd suggest bringing a pen/paper to write down the error code & Google it afterwards. It's definitely handy for getting rid of the check engine light.
Probably not a cheap fix. The car will not pass the test if the light is on during the test. The light is on when the computer has a problem that will affect emissions or performance. You would need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes then fix the problem. Once the problem is fixed and the code is erased, the light should stay off.
If engine is quiet as usual, lots of oil in sump,( Check dipstick)--Usually the light will reset after a certain time period--unless other problem. If over 100,000 miles --have oxygen sensor tested.
there is a number of reasons your check engine light is on. Your car is equipped with a self diagnostic system . There is also codes that your engine will display on a tester to tell you what is wrong. But when the check engine light comes on it is telling you its time to put it in a garage and find the problem and fix it.
the alternator is computer controlled, so what you need to do at this point is have the system tested for fault codes to determine what is going on here, any Kragen or Autozone can do this for FREE!
check the gas cap...i"ve found that a loose cap will set off the check light...if you dont have a computer to recall or reset the codes i believe it"ll just go away after you drive it for a couple days on its on once corrected.
