I have a 93 f350 with a 7.3 diesel engine. Sometimes it won't start other times it starts right away. It is completely random. It is not a fuel or temp. Issue I'm sure of that. If it does not start with in 5 sec. Of turning the key Its not going to continuing to crank will not ever make it start. I have to turn the ignition off wait a minute and try again again if it doesn't start within 5 sec. Its not going to. Some times it will take 10-15 cycles of turning the ignition off and waiting a minute to turn it back on and cranking again before it will start other times it may only take 1 or 2 times. It really is completely random. Help

On one of the occasions when it won't start back up, someone will need to figure out if you have lost spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors to be able to troubleshoot the problem.

I would try replacing your Fuel Filter first. It could be that simple.

it may be idle control sensor or a bad mas air flow sensor--maf sensor in otherwords. or could be engine misfire at cold temp. start. only time when cold? or does run better when warm? try warming engine to operating temperature before driving,if problem removes it's self after warm up,up grade gas to 93 octane for 1 tank full. then see if problem goes away. it's cold where you are right? if so the fuel needs to be at least midgrade 89 octane fuel because 87 octane fuel will not start your honda correctly at cold temps. in cold weather 93 or super gas octane will start ,no problem,low octane fuel sometimes gels, or freezes at low temps. if in warm climate, change the fuel filter, add fuel injector cleaner to your fuel tank[preferablly lucas fuel treatment] this will lube your fuel injectors and give better fuel mileage. thank you for choosing fixya.com

Glow plugs create enough heat to fire the diesel fuel - could be some are defective..Saw an individual start a diesel by spraying either into intake. He said his glow plugs needed replaced. It started right up.

sounds like your having a glow plug issue. you can buy glow plugs at most auto parts store for about ten bucks each. they aren't that hard to replace. you can remove them with a deep socket. they are located at each cylinder you can see them right from the top. each has a single thick wire connected to them. good luck leave a comment on your results.

Is it a diesel engine? if so, there may be water in the fuel filter which needs draining out. Whether it's diesel or petrol there could be an air lock in the fuel system, particularly in the engine bay (check that flexible fuel pipes are not routed too near hot engine components like the exhaust). If they have been disturbed recently for servicing, they may not have been repositioned under the clips that keep them away from hot components.

it sounds like the stop/start solenoid on the diesel pumps faulty, which bentley manual are you after model and engine size please

should check if the injectors are shooting the fuel, if not it could be your ecm
