My A/C clutch stopped working. The clutch is OK because when I hotwire it, it engages. The electrical commard circuit is at fault. The button on the dash lights up, the two fuses look OK. I've changed the relay, but no improvement. A second relay, however, is marked "clutch", could this relay be for the A/C clutch? I'd like to know.

Does the A/C compressor engage ? Does the heater work ? Possible A/C compressor clutch if not turning on or A/C compressor clutch relay . Viewing a wiring diagram an testing the electrical circuits would be the way to find the problem .

Check for a blown fuse ,if ok check for battery voltage at the A/C clutch if ok the clutch is faulty, if no voltage check both sides of the A/C switch if voltage ok the cable to the clutch is open circuit ,if no voltage to the switch, cable to the power supply open circuit, if voltage to only one side of switch, switch is at fault.

Knowing make model and year would help. Most newer vehicles, 2000 and newer, will adjust the idle control up to compensate for the compressor engaging. Possible there is an issue in the idle air control valve or electrical circuit.

1. Check if air blows with the fan setting turned to high.
2. Check that the radiator cooling fan engages when the A/C button is pressed.
3. Locate the compressor.
4. Turn on the A/C.
5. Check if the compressor's clutch has been engaged.
6. If the clutch engages, the fault is elsewhere.
7. If the clutch does not engage, check for power to the clutch.

These steps might help find the problem.

Since you know that the clutch must engage in order for the compressor to operate, then there are most likely one of causes. The first is low or no freon in the system. The a/c system has a pressure sensor mounted in the low( return) side hose that prevents the clutch to engage if the freon is too low. The second would be the a/c fuse or relay faulty, preventing the clutch solenoid( a 12 volt electrically operated solenoid) from engaging. And the third would be that the clutch itself is bad because the solenoid wiring has broken. I suggest that first you locate the a/c clutch relay in the relay panel, remove the relay, carefully remove the plastic cover from the relay and reinstall the relay. The clutch should engage the compressor when you manually close the relay contact with your finger for one or two seconds. If the clutch does engage, your electrical circuit in ok and you are probably low on freon. A half of a can of r-134 in more that enough to operate the pressure switch. If it doesn't engage, check the a/c fuse or the clutch solenoid itself. Get back to me and let me know how things went. Dano

Make sure the a/c switch is in the on position.

The clutch will not engage if it is low on freon. It has a high pressure switch and a low pressure switch which keeps the power from the compressor so no damage will happen. Have the freon checked.

the air blend door inside the heating / cooling unit that sits under the dash is probably not moving. there is an electric motor and control unit that moves the air blend door (assuming you have the electric dial or push button digital controls. some of these vehicles have a valve that shuts off the antifreeze from cycling through the heater and if it remains open then you would get "not hot" but just warm air.
