Should a 2002 jetta tdi- automatic at 87,000 miles
Should a 2002 jetta tdi- automatic at 87000 miles need a new transmission-especially since it has always been taken to vw dealerships for any and all work
Re: should a 2002 jetta tdi- automatic at 87,000 miles
That specific transmission is known for failure. Sometimes it's premature failure (in your case) and sometimes they have 150k miles, but that specific automatic transmission will always fail. There are plenty of stories online about premature failure of the 01M VW transmission...

have you tried at all to reset the program of the automatic transmission ? Always remember that even a simple connector been removed for second and re connected always needs adaptation before starting the car VW. Try to do the automatic transmission with adaptation.
I suggest only using power steering fluid in the power steering system in VW Jetta's. I tried using trans. fluid before and it made the pump wine constantly especially when cold and I had to purge the system and refill it with power steering fluid to get it to stop.
Most 1995-on VW models don't have a transmission fluid dipstick for
checking the transmission fluid level. To fill and check the level of
the VW automatic transmission fluid you have to remove a plug on the
side or bottom (location depends on model and if you have an automatic vs. manual transmission) of the transmission drain
pan. The factory manual refers the expensive VAG 1924 special tool for
pumping the VW automatic transmission fluid into the oil pan.
You have the infamous Volkswagen 01M automatic transmission. Rumor is, every single one of these tranny's will fail -it's only a matter of time. You may not necessarily need a new or rebuilt tranny. Do some searching at www.tdiclub.com - there's a ton of info over there - those guys are extremely knowledgeable.
Could need a tranny service. Be careful who you take it to. Special fluids and tools are required to do it. They could burn up the tranny if they do it wrong.
My 2002 Jetta TDI will not always go into reverse. When this happens I put it in 1st then back to reverse and many times it goes right in reverse. It happens whether it is cold or warmed.
Unless you have a check engine light on or other electrical warning for the transmission chances are the transmission is failing and needs an overhaul.
Hi, Did you notice the motor actually reving higher when the tachometer was reading a higher rpm.. If it was it could be your transmission slipping.. Set your cruise control and listen to your motor while the tachometer starts moving erratically.. Good Luck
