The cap is label with the #1 plugwire spot, start there with this firing order 15634278 going clockwise and you should be okay, if your cap is not labeled then remove the #1 cylinder spark plug and put the piston on the top of the compression stroke, then remove cap and the rotor will be pointing at #1,good luck

You did not specify what vehicle, but the cylinder numbers are usually stamped on the cap and the cylinders are numbered from front (crank) to back (transmission). On a V configuration the cylinders are numbered left to right from the front of the engine to the back of the engine

You will have to get number one up,the piston on number one cylinder, then remove the cap to see where the rotor is pointing, then start your number one plug wire there, make sure you go around the distributor the same way the rotor button turns, and the firing oder is 1563427,if it back fires, then you are 180 degrees out, remove the wires, and start them directly across from where you had number one, then it will start.

Distributor wiring diagram for a 455 Buick hei to engine block

1. Connect the distributor's B+ (battery) terminal to a switched 12-volt source, such as the ignition switch.

2. Connect the distributor's tach terminal to the tachometer signal wire, if you have a tachometer.

3. Connect the distributor's ground wire to a good engine ground.

4. Connect the distributor's #1 spark plug wire to the #1 spark plug on the engine. The #1 spark plug is usually located on the driver's side front cylinder.

5. Connect the remaining spark plug wires in firing order sequence to the distributor cap terminals. The firing order for a Buick 455 engine is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

6. Install the distributor cap and rotor.

Why is my 1992 ford festiva firing in the order 1-2-3-4 and not 1-3-4-2?

Your order is wrong, and you need to switch the wires around on the top of the distributor. First pull the distributor cap off to find direction of rotation (some distributors turn clockwise, and some turn counterclockwise). Watch the rotor, the black bar on top of distributor shaft, and note it's direction of travel while someone bumps the starter over with the ignition switch. Now you can put the dist. cap back on, and arrange the spark plug wires in order 1-3-4-2. Leave number 1 in place, if it is marked as 1 on the cap. The plug wires can be pulled out of the raised terminals in the distributor cap for setting them in order. Just be careful of pulling too ******* the wires, you can cause them to break internally. Twist them back and forth first to loosen them, and gently pull them out, using the plug wire's rubber boot if possible to pull on them.
If it is easier to pull the sparkplug wires off the spark plug, rather than the distributor cap, you could set the order that way. Just need to know the direction of rotor travel. Number1 will go to cylinder 1, and next in order will be number 3, following direction of rotation, so that wire goes to cylinder 3, and on to 4, then 2.
Post back if you need more help. Good luck.

Firing order for a 1986 gmc s15

FIRING ORDERS

To avoid confusion, ALWAYS replace spark plug wires one at a time.

The most important thing to remember about the removal and installation of a distributor, cap or spark plug cable is that all wires MUST be labelled before they are disconnected. Keep in mind that these figures depict a firing order where the distributor cap terminals are relative to EACH OTHER only and they do not necessarily depict the tower positions in relation to the rest of the engine. This is true because any distributor which has been removed and reinstalled may have been installed with the No. 1 spark plug tower at any position (360 degrees) in relation to the rest of the motor, as long as the rotor aligned to the No. 1 tower when the No. 1 cylinder was at TDC of the compression stroke (valves closed, ready for the plug to fire). As long as the remaining wires were connected in the correct firing order sequence (depending on direction of distributor rotation) the engine will run. DO NOT EVER remove more than one wire from the distributor cap at a time unless you tag ALL wires and towers to assure proper installation.

HEI DISTRIBUTOR PROBLEMS

on the intake manifold you will see 8 numbers, this is your firing order
from the front of the car the left side numbers are 1,3,5,7 and the right side are 2,4,6,8. now ont the distributor cap there should be a number 1 at one of the plug towers. you start there with #1 plug wireand continue.
on a chevy the firing order is 18436572 and this is the order you put the wires on the cap. now the second problem i don't know right off hand which way the rotor turns on your engine. so remove the cap and crank the engine over and see which way the rotor turns, this is the order you put the wires back on the cap. hope this helps
