My 2001 Ford Windstar van seems to be using alot of water/coolant. Filling coolant container daily & empty by end of day. No leaks I can find nor does Temp gauge go past middle. Does not seem to over heat. Did notice coolant smell & some vapor coming from vents inside van but no steam or leaks from engine compartment?
Possible coolant leak on hot engine parts causing it to evaporate as it leaks. That would definitely invade the cabin air.
You would need to carefully check under the hood with the engine warmed up and running.
Also could be a headgasket failure between coolant channels and a combustion chamber. This latter problem sometimes shows itself as vapor at the tailpipe after there should be no more visible. You may also detect the odor of coolant there too.
If you absolutely need
to drive the van without having it serviced ensure your coolant/water is topped
off prior to setting out. Make sure you have LOTS of water on hand to top
it off if needed and keep a very close eye on your temperature gauge. You
should also stop every few hours even if the temperature gauge stays in the
"normal" range to ensure its operating at the correct temperature.
There could be a few things wrong with the van, but damage to the
radiator or cracked hoses could be likely culprits.
That being said I wouldn't recommend any long trips before having this issue fixed.
