Only way is to use diagnistic equipment.Go to HAND BRAKE . There is option to release the pistons. When you change the brake pads you have to use option - engage .
I too found out the hard way that you need a Brake Piston tool kit to do a brake job on a 2008 VW Jetta. The piston must be turned simultaneously while compressing. The Piston tool kit does that for you. Two solutions. If you do brake jobs often, buy one (i.e. Harbor Freight #69053 $40-$50) OR if you do brake jobs infrequently as me, go to your neighborhood Advance Auto and for a down payment, you can borrow one and when returned, get a refund of your down payment. Maybe the other auto parts stores (O'Reilly, Autozone, Napa, etc...) loan tools as well,
