My 1987 chevy blazer shuts off when coming to a complete stop. when i start the car it sometimes idles? stalls? but keeps going? then other times it starts and just DIES(unless i keep my foot on the gas pedal) heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp! in traffic it will shut off and the steering wheel AND brakes LOCK up :( so i just put it in neutral and restart it...

. Have it checked for a trouble code. It seems like a sensor problem. ( Idle position , crankshaft position, camshaft position sensors could be bad. Also the EGR valve could be bad. with a caode you can narrow it down a bit.
SOURCE: RX300 Engine Stalls when I take foot off the gas pedal.
The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is clogged. This part feeds air to the engine at start-up and idle when the throttle bodies are closed. I removed the throttle body assembly from my 2001 RX300 and separated it from the IAC. After a good cleaning with throttle body cleaner the IAC was good as new. I later decided to replace it during routine maintenance. You can pick up a brand new IAC on eBay (genuine Lexus/Toyota part). The dealer will want upwards of $400.00 for a 45 minute job (all you need are basis hand tools).
SOURCE: IDLE PROBLEM
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
Check and clean Idle air control valve. Make sure its responding to signal as well. Also make sure ther are no vacuum hoses disconnected. This may not be a "cure" but it's a good place to start.

It sounds like the idle air control valve (IAC) may be stuck with carbon build up. You can ether remove the IAC, or if your lazy like i am, buy two cans of Throttle body cleaner. Just follow the instruction on the can and pay attention to the IAC, try to spray the Throttle body cleaner hose towards the IAC. DO NOT USE CARB CLEANER, it's too corrosive to the gaskets used on throttle body's. If your going to remove the IAC, The idle air control valve is located on the back of the throttle body. It has an oval electrical connector and two torx screws holding it in. Unplug the connector, remove the two screws then lightly tap the body with a soft faced mallet to loosen it from the body. Once you have it out and prior to installing a new valve clean the seat inside the throttle body where the idle control fits. This must be very clean! Installation is in the reverse order. Btw, to save some cash, pull the valve out and clean it, this usually fixes the problem for quite a while. Look for crushed / cut, just any signs of damage to the wire harness to your IAC. After you have cleaned the IAC and still have the problem, you may have a bad IAC and needs to be replaced. Good luck and hope this helps.
Engine stalling issue at low speeds
This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
