Few things to look into: 1. If you have not had a tune up in the past 3 years you should look at: - new spark plugs (the mechanic can diagnose if it is a elctrical issue) - new fuel filter (maybe fuel pump... black smoke indicates it burning rich) - air filter change - you will need to check that your coolant is at least 50:50, it will need to be bled (do a search on youtube to learn how to do it the traditional way and in the alternative go to a garage) - change your oil. So that is the basics. Now if you are overheating you might have other issues like a bum thermostat (40$) or heater core... or rad... The clanking could be a timing belt. Best to bring it in to a dealer to diagnose... then take it to a good mechanic for a second, third, fourth, fifth opinion.....

Get it towed to a shop. Sounds like an idler or tensioner going bad. If it failed you will bend valves and damage the engine badly.

1999 Volvo S70 emitting black smoke from exhaust

Sounds like computer to me , black smoke might just be due to fuel /air mixture.
Avoid dealerships , find a reputable mechanic.
Almost any shop can plug your car into a diagnostic computer .
If you live close to me , I would be happy to take an s-70 off your hands :)

Ruff idle,no power

it sounds like this problems is related to the ETM, or electronic throttle module. if software download was already performed, next step is to clean the throttle body bore. ultimately, the module may need to be replaced.
