Air conditioner works then stops blowing cold air

I have a 1995 Volvo station wagon. The air works fine when the car is first started. After the air goes off (I assume because of a thermostat) it does not blow any cold air. If you stop the car, it will blow cold air again, but then stops once it cycles off.

Thanks! I'm assuming the compressor is on, but will check. I also read about the possibility of the clutch shims being too small because of wear, causing the clutch to not re-engage. Have you heard of this? How would I check for this as well?

You ARE right! it is the clutch on the compressor.......thanks!!!

When you day the air goes on and off i assume you mean the compressor goes on and off. that is what moves th freon through the system. if you are getting cold air when the compressor is running then the problem is that the compressor is stopping and that would be because a pressure switch may be bad. it is possible that model has a thermal shut down too say if the compressor was low on lubricant and was overheating when it does run. but if it is a pressure switch that is failing and they do, it is an easy fix. if you follow the ac lines you will find the switch.it is small about the size of a sparkplug-attached to the ac line and will have a connector with two wires. if the car is running and ac is on but the compressor is not turning remove the connector and jump to two wires. the compressor will start running if the switch was bad and we are sure there is a good charge on the system. if you are getting cold air there should be a sufficient charge to close the switch. these switches can be removed without losing any freon. there is a valve below them that will shut off when the switch is removed. then all you have to do is get a new one and screw it into place, apply the connector and you are done. if that is the problem. hope this helps please let me know and good luck

sorry i took so long to reply - i would think the clutch was ok or you wouldn't get any cold air. when the clutch fails the compressor doesn't turn so no movement of freon would occur. did you look for the pressure switch?

If it were the pressure switch, it wouldn't work at all......EVER. I just fixed mine with the same problem. You need to shim the clutch. It works when cold but not when warmed up because the magnets are not strong enough to pull the clutch in when warm. Shove the clutch in with a broom handle carefully while running and the clutch will kick in and work, that is the way you know I am right.

Here is a trick on how to reshim the clutch in 5 minutes. Get underneath the car and take off the cover so you can see the compressor. Cut 3 small pieces out of a credit card and jam them in underneath the 3 places where the clutch bracket on the very outside holds the clutch on. This will in turn push the clutch in. The clutch must have less than 20/1000ths clearance to activate. This will push it within range. I just did this on mine, and it works. I laugh at people who answer questions who have no clue as to what they are talking about and get rated highly, when they are WRONG.

How do you find the clutch in the compresser. I want to try to do it on my own but need information. Also I am having issues with misfires. When I drive on the interstate it is fine but when I drive on the regular road my car takes a while to get to speed to the point were it feels like it will stop. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

2002 Nissan Maxima SE - Air condition not blowing cold air

simply "adding a can"is a good way to end up with non-functional A/C. the typical system has high/low pressure switches that enable/disable the system. you need to be at the correct volume of refrigerant as specified on the sticker under the hood. i recommend using the proper equipment, evacuating, pulling a vacuum, and then refilling the system with the appropriate amount.

Sounds like you are either low on coolant, or a head gasket failure.

Low on coolant would be my first guess. Does the temp gauage go up to middle, normal range?Should have a low coolant light on dash, but sometimes the sensor is diabled or broken. I would relace the t-stat and the sensor next to the t-stat housing. Tou will need a 40 torx to get the t-stat off.
