You need to retrieve the code to begin. with the code we may be able to help better but The light could also be on beacause a wheel sensor failed. usually if the ABS light and the brake light and the speedometer will not work when the module fails. We usually dont have issues with the pump. If just the abs light is on your best bet is to put it on a diagnostic scanner. That way you can see all the wheel speeds. If a sensor is bad the speed for that sensor will be erratic,

The first place to start is to have this vehicle scanned for codes. this will help you (and us!) start the diagnostics. the pump and fuse are very unlikely problems, most common issue on these trucks being wheel bearings going bad. the abs encoder ring is integral to the hub and bearing assembly on these trucks. also, with a scan tool you can monitor the output readings on the sensors to see if you have a "lazy" sensor, triggering a fault code. all comes back to getting a scan tool hooked up on this truck. good luck!

Put truck on stands and check if there is alot of play in the bearings. If the top of the wheel moves in and out, your wheel bearing assembly need replaced. Kragen was the cheepest place to get one. This caused some serious stopping problems on my 2001/1500/4x4

Find the abs fuse and pull it out. If its good then its not the fuse. Try checking the brake fluid level first. If those are both good then its the pump.

What brake ststem do 2001 silverados have? rear brakes

Hi. Your 2001 Chevy Silverado is equipped with Antilock Brake System (ABS). You will identify also if your car is equipped with ABS by looking at the instrument panel for a yellow ABS indicator light after you turn on the ignition.

All the best!

I know nothing about cars but my ABS just activated on my 2001 Chevy Suburban. Cut ignition off and motor still running. Happened in 2005 also, cost $1500 to fix. Is there anything I can do so I can drive...

Remove the ABS maxi-fuse (Large fuse) located in the under hood electrical center. In the event you cannot locate that fuse, you can unplug the ABS pump two wire connector at the ABS pump motor located under the vehicle.
Good luck

2001 Suburban ABS motor staying on after ignition is off

what you have is a ABS module that has shorted out internally. you have to replace that module and then bleed the ABS pump AND the brakes at all wheels.
