Looking to do a motor swap in a 98 sunfire...what motors fit?

Looking to do a motor swap in a 98 sunfire...what motors can i put in it? Is it true that the 98 year is a 98 2.2 sunfire motor only car? I really want something bigger and badder! lol

Thanks for another opinion on that! I guess Ive seen people put some big ass motors in them and was hoping to hear the "oh yeah this is what you have to do..." and it would all work out and be easy as pie! but i guess Ill just stick with the 2.2 that I just picked up...only thing is its from a junk yard...what should I do to it to make it as new as possible without totally rebuilding it? I know im gonna do the head gasket...but what else can I do?

It is true, you can only put another 98 2.2 liter in it. They did come with a 2.4 liter but you have to swap the motor, transmission, wiring harness, computer, and God knows what else. I would go with the 2.2 liter and check into some performance aftermarket parts for the 2.2, computer chip, performance exhaust and so on, somewhere like Summit Racing.

The head gasket is a good idea, I would check the rear main seal for leaking, and the timing chain and tensioner, the tensioners went out alot on theses, causing the motor to jump time and bend the valves. Also throw in a new thermostat, there's not much else you can do, unless you see something that doesn't look good, or leaking. It's always easier to work on the motor when it's out of the car.

Blown motor in 93 Toyota 4x4, want to replace with 98 Tocoma motor. Any issues with swap?

by all rights it should be a great fit.
but all things look good on paper!! Seriously....your swap will be fine,as the years are fully interchangable. you may run into some wiring issues with sensors, and that can be fixed by just splicing in new connectors that fit them.

My 1997 pontiac sunfire is overheating. There is

there is a steel pipe that runs across the motor there, they are prone to corroding and leaking, you might get away with cutting it and bridging with a piece of hose but the best bet is to replace it. We have been lucky a couple of times and found a car in the wreckers that had newish ones fitted.

95 sunfire engine swap

It will fit but your going to have to do a lot of engine management retrofit to have your engine run right unless you have the ECM for the engine also. Good luck and hope this helps.

Engine Swap

There are several engines that will fit the 2.2l Ecotec, 2.4L high out put motor, and I have actually seen a chevy cavalier that has a 3800 V6 in it if you want to go all out but in most cases sticking with the ecotec motor or the 2.4 High Out Put motor would be best they are two of the best motors for these cars and since the Sunfire is basically the same car as the cavalier almost any thing motor wise is inner change able between cars depending on the motors i own an 2004 chevy cavalier LS sport and a buddy of myn has a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire and both have the 2.2L Ecotec and are both Manual trans and even most of the interior parts are the same except for some of the dash board components hope this helps you out
