I went to replace the brake light in my 2008 chevy 2500 express cargo van, and I couldn't get the tail light off without dismantling the entire rear portion of the van. Am I doing something wrong? It should be an easy fix, but turned out to be a bit of a nightmare.
Yes, the snaps are hard to remove. I would suggest that once you get the old snaps out, go to an automotive store (Pep-Boys) and find a different style snap, to make it easier the next time the bulb needs to be replaced.
You have to remove the upper applique to remove the tail lamp, it is the trim panel above the lamp. I think it is held in place by two nuts/bolts but not sure. You have to have the rear doors open to remove it

yeah, that's the piece giving me grief. No problem removing the top and bottom nut holding the piece down. It's the snaps that hold it in place on the opposite site of the appliance. They won't give, and I'm afraid if I try to hard, I'll break the appliance.
Did you ever find out how to replace that bulb?
I have the same situation. And so I drive around Without a signal/tail light, in fear of breaking lense or assembley. One would think, since it's a Definate SAFETY ISSUE, that Chevy would've made it EASY. But Nooooooooooooooooooooo
Hope you can shed some Light!
Thanks
I did figure it out! I just went for broke and 'forced' that black appliance off of the 2 'snaps' on the opposite side of the bolts that hold it down. I took a wide blade cold chisel, put it up against the edge of the appliance where the snaps are holding it in place, and tapped it with a hammer away from the body of the van. It popped right off with a little persuasion and I didn't break it in the process. Once it's off you have one more nut to remove on the tail light to get to the bulb. When you're done, you just line up the pegs and push the appliance back on, then finish up with the nuts and you're done. Hope this helps
